People can start or return to college at any time and Sherry (Hall) Curl epitomized that when she started her Southern California College journey at the age of 36. Having called in to the Athletic Department asking if she could get a scholarship to run (having not had any high school experience), Sherri blew new Head Coach and fellow Fall of Hame Member Bryan Wilkins away with a 6:30 per minute mile pace on a run out to Back Bay and back to campus.
With a scholarship in hand, Hall redefined what people could expect from those over 30. Hall would explode into the Golden State Athletic Conference scene by winning the conference title race in a time of 19:40 in 1988. She went on to finish as an All-GSAC runner in fifth in 1989 and claimed the gold again with an 18:16 in 1990. Her junior year would be punctuated with a ninth-place finish at the 1990 NAIA Cross Country National Championship to earn All-American honors. She was the NAIA District III champion those three years and still owns the third-best time in program history at 17:38 at the 1990 UC Riverside event.
Her talents translated naturally to the long distance events on the track and she set three school records that stood for many years during the spring seasons. While her 3,000m and 5,000m would eventually be broken by her daughter Sarah Hall, Sherri still holds the 10,000m (36:16.26) and marathon (2:56:04) records at Vanguard. She put her name in the book as the first individual GSAC event track and field champion in program history with a 10,0000m crown as part of the amazing 1990 season, with her time at that run still standing as a GSAC Championship record. She continued to defy her age by finishing as the NAIA District III champion in 1989 and qualified for the NAIA Championships in both 1989 & 1990. Hall finished her career in 1990 championships in Stephenville, Texas, with a fifth-place finish in the 10,000m run to become an All-American. She won many races during her career, was a track and field Academic All-American in 1990, and was named the VU Female Athlete of the Year in 1989 and 1990.
One of the most prolific runners in program history, Hall graduated and then obtained her Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in Marriage & Family Counseling from Pepperdine University in 1995. She then got her Marriage & Family Therapy License and began her own practice and competed in the World Seniors Games, where she continued to win races and set records in the 3,000m, 5,000m, and 10,000m.
