Kevin Carlson graduated from Katella High School in

1991 and he went on to attend Fullerton Junior College, where he played basketball and participated in track and field. During his time at Fullerton JC, Kevin became the ninth all-time leading scorer in the basketball program. He also captured the 1994 California Community College State Championship in the high jump. Carlson matriculated to SCC in the fall of 1994, where he continued as a two-sport athlete in men’s basketball and track and field.
Carlson played an integral role on the basketball team for two seasons under the guidance of Head Coach and fellow HOF member Bill Reynolds. He was named to the All-GSAC Men’s Basketball Team in 1995, when he averaged 16.7 points per game and finished eighth in the league in total scoring. He was named to the all-GSAC team again in 1996, ranking seventh in the league in scoring and averagin 16.2 PPG.
Carlson was selected as the team’s most valuable player following his impressive junior and senior campaigns. He was an accurate shooter capable of having big scoring games, but he is perhaps most remembered for frequently thrilling crowds in “The Pit” with his athletic and powerful slam-dunks.
During his time at SCC, Kevin had the privilege of participating in both basketball and track and field with his brother, Brian, who was also an SCC graduate (’97).
As dominant as Kevin was in basketball, his greatest notoriety came as a track and field student-athlete. He still holds the school record in the high jump (7’3”), which was a mere 1 ¼” short of the 1996 Olympic Trial qualifying mark. As a junior, Carlson was the GSAC runner-up in the high jump, coming in second to his brother. In his senior season (1996), he became the GSAC Champion with a jump of 7” ¼”. He is a two-time NAIA All-American in the high jump. Carlson boasted a third-place finish at the 1995 NAIA Outdoor National Championships with a jump of 6’ 11 ¾ ” and stood atop the podium as the 1996 NAIA National Champion in the high jump with a jump of 7’ ½ ”. Kevin also held a top-10 time in the long jump. In 1996, Kevin was named the athletic department’s Male Athlete of the Year.
Carlson went on to teach physical education at Sycamore Junior High School in Anaheim. He has been married for 17-plus years to Suzan, who graduated from SCC in 1998. They have two children: Wyatt and Chase, who was born on May 22, 2003, and sadly went to be with the Lord on July 21, 2005.
