Kelly Schmidt was a standout student-athlete in basketball for the Blue and Gold from 2003-2007, highlighted by being namedKelly Schmidt Gets HOF Award the NAIA Division 1 Women's Basketball Player of the Year for the 2005-2006 season, the second time a SCC/VU player received such an honor in program history.  

During her four-year career, Schmidt helped the Lions to a 125-10 record overall and 76-4 in Golden State Athletic Conference play, along with a 40-0 GSAC record in each of her final two seasons (2005-2006, 2006-2007).  A four-year starter, Schmidt made the all-GSAC and the NAIA All-American list every year during her career.  

Schmidt still holds the record for total points scored in SCC/VU history with 2,639, 632 more than Jessica Richter.  Other records held include field goals attempted (1,579), field goals made (900), free throws attempted (1,037), free throws made (828), total rebounds (1,055), games played (135), games started (135), and total minutes played (4,735).  She is third all-time in scoring average (19.5), second in field goal percentage (.570), 11th in average rebounds per game (7.8), ninth in assists (306), 11th in blocked shots (45), fourth in steals (235), and third in average minutes (35.1).

In a season, Schmidt holds the records for most points in a single season (823 in 2004-2005), her 684 in the 2005-2006 season is third, and her 2003-20024 total of 674 is sixth all-time.  She averaged 22.9 PPG in 04-05, which is second all-time, and also has the sixth-best mark (20.7 in 05-06) and ninth-best (19.8 in 03-04) scoring average in a season.  She is tied with Claire Lamunu with 292 field goals made to top the charts and is also fifth (244) and ninth (218) in that category.  She holds the fourth spot with 512 field goals attempted in a single season and has the sixth and seventh spots for total rebounds in a single season (296 and 295).  She has the top four spots in free throws made in a single season, with 237 being the top mark in her 2003-2004 campaign.  She also has the top three spots in three throws attempted, with 293 being the top mark in that same 03-04 season.   Her 04-05 season also had her tied for third for games started (36), second in minutes (1.285), and fourth in minutes per game (36.2).

In a single game, Schmidt is tied for third with the third-most points in a contest with 41, which she did against La Sierra on November 23, 2004.  That game and one 10 days earlier against Bethany has her fourth all-time with 16 field goal conversions and the LSU game and another against Bethany on November 25, 2005, have her fourth in field goal percentage in a game (.909).  She is tied for second with 15 made free throws in a game against St. Xavier on March 18, 2004, with her 18 attempts in that game tied for third all-time.  Lastly, she holds the record for 10 steals in a game against La Sierra on December 14, 2004.

She was a two-time VU Female Athlete of the Year, a GSAC and NAIA Scholar-Athlete, and graduated with a liberal studies degree in May 2007.  She would rejoin the Blue and Gold in 2007-2008 as an assistant coach which proved to huge, as she helped the Lions to its first-ever team National Championship.  

After her days at Vanguard came to a close, Schmidt returned to Arizona, where she worked in ministry.  Some highlights of that include working for the FCA chapter of Arizona and being a chaplain at Grand Canyon University.  She also has spent time mentoring junior high and high school students nearby, using what she learned as a student-athlete and coach at VU to spread the love of God.
