When talking about Southern California College athletics, it is the legendary men's basketball coach Bill Reynolds that stands as one of the pillars of success for all of SCC.  Reynolds arrived for the 1981-82 season and promptly went 21-10 in his first year at the helm.  He gained over 20 wins nine more times over his 17 years at SCC, and his 1988-89 season would be the biggest jewel in his crown.  That team won the first Golden State Athletic Conference men's basketball championship, going 13-1 in league play and 29-5 overall, a single-season wins record until the 2013-14 NAIA Championship winning team (inducted in 2024) upped the ante by three (32-6).

Reynolds and company won the league again in the 1989-1990 season and the squad finished in second or third over the next three years.  Despite two down years under .500, Coach Reynolds recruited and coached the program back to winning ways over his final three seasons, finishing in third of fourth in the GSAC while winning 20 games in 1995-96 and 1996-97, along with 19 victories in 1997-98.

Reynolds tallied a career record of 353-186 and a winning percentage of 65% at SCC and he still has the most wins as a coach in SCC/VU history.  He coached future HOF member Kevin Carlson both Carlson and the 1989-1990 team entered the Vanguard Hall of Fame in 2014.  In total, he had six NAIA All-Americans during his tenure, 18 NAIA District 3 All-District team honorees, and 26 All-GSAC players.  His impact on the athletic department, the student-athletes he coached, and the game of basketball, goes far beyond his wins and loses.  While he would leave after the 1997-98 school year, his name would live on in SCC/Vanguard University history and the basketball court is still named in his honor.  For a number of years, the men's basketball team hosted the Bill Reynolds Holiday Classic between Christmas and New Years Eve.

Reynolds put in 39 years of service with the Garden Grove, La Quinta, and Bolsa Grande High School Districts outside of his collegiate coaching.  He and wife, Shirley, have been married for over 42 years and they had three daughters and many grandchildren.
