Kelly (Boeke) Walters was a four-year player for Southern California College/Vanguard women’s basketball and played a pivotal role in helping the program continue its rise to dominance.

Boeke arrived in 1998-99 after second-year Head Coach Russ Davis, a fellow VU HOF member, won his first Golden State Athletic Conference regular season and conference tournament championships during the 1997-98 school year. Boeke impressed her coach enough to start in all but two games as a freshman, averaging 11.0 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. The team finished 27-9 overall and 11-3 in the GSAC to claim a second straight conference regular season title. The Vanguards defeated Azusa Pacific, 61-53, in the conference tournament final, with Boeke posting nine points. SCC toppled Lipscomb (Tenn.) in the NAIA National Tournament opener, 71-66, before being eliminated in the next round. But the freshman had proved her mettle.

The 1999-2000 season saw Boeke post career numbers in most categories, and she propelled the newly renamed Lions to a 28-7 overall record. The Lions repeated as GSAC regular season champion for the third straight year with a 15-3 league mark, but lost to Azusa Pacific in the Tournament title game, 77-71. But Boeke did all she could in that game, playing 29 minutes and tallying 23 points on 8 of 18 shooting from the field. She also nabbed a team-high 11 rebounds, eight of them on the offensive end. VU lost in its NAIA National Tournament opening round game to Western Montana College, but that did not dampen Boeke’s year. She averaged 14.6 points per game and tallied a team-best 496 points across 34 games. As a starter in 30 games, Boeke shot 53.1% from the field and snared a team-high 330 total rebounds for an average of 9.7 per game. That landed her 16th on the single-season leaderboard in scoring, 11th in free throws made, sixth in free throws attempted, third in rebounds and sixth in rebounds per game. She earned All-GSAC honors and was named an NAIA All-American Honorable Mention as a sophomore. She also received GSAC Scholar-Athlete and NAIA Scholar-Athlete awards.

The Lions began the new decade with identical 17-12 records, going 10-8 in the GSAC in 2000-01 to place fifth. Boeke earned another All-GSAC citation, leading the squad with 347 points and 221 rebounds, while averaging a team-best 12.4 points and 7.9 rebounds. Boeke shot 50.4% from the floor in 28 games. She helped buoy the Lions back into contention in the 2001-02 season, as a reloaded but young Vanguard squad jumped to 13-6 in conference play for third place. The Lions took down Westmont in the GSAC Tournament opener before falling to APU – a game in which Boeke posted 13 points and 14 rebounds - in a triple overtime thriller. The Lions garnered enough attention to receive an at-large selection for the NAIA Tournament. In a sensational senior season, Boeke averaged 13 points per game and recorded 325 total points, both team-highs. She shot 50.6% from the floor and a career-best 71.7% from the free throw line. She averaged 7.6 rebounds per game while starting 23 of 25 games played, earning All-GSAC honors for the third year in a row, as well as a second straight selection to the NAIA All-American Honorable Mention list. Boeke captured GSAC and NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors again and was named the VU Female Athlete of the Year.

Boeke’s career numbers included 12.7 points per game and 1,541 points over 121 games. She shot 52.0% from the floor. She also averaged 8.2 rebounds per game and tallied 988 career rebounds. On the school’s all-time leaderboard, Boeke was fourth in career points, fifth in field goals made, eighth in field goals attempted, second in both free throws attempted and made, second in total rebounds, eighth in rebounds per game and eighth in total minutes. Her senior mentorship impacted current and future teammates, as the Blue and Gold would go on to win five straight GSAC regular season titles and four of the next five GSAC tournaments.
