Hall of Fame
The 1985 baseball team for Southern California College set the bar for what a program could achieve. The squad would roll to an impressive 45-20-2 record, a record that, according to known records, is still the most for any SCC/Vanguard University team (the 2022 team came up one game short).
Rick Emard would guide the lineup throughout the season en route to the first NAIA World Series appearance for the program. The team would go 2-2 at the World Series, held in Lewiston, Idaho for the second time in NAIA history (Lewiston would host until 1991 and has hosted again since 2000). The team would be Phillips (Okla.) 7-0 before taking a loss to Lewis-Clark State (the eventual champions) 17-2. Bouncing back, SCC would beat Georgia College 6-5 in a thrilling clash before falling 9-2 to Dallas Baptist (the runners up).
Coach Emard was joined by assistant coach Tommy Edwards to guide the following roster: Eduardo Andrews, Mark Deushane, Mark Gordon, Shaw Lefevre, Michael Peterson, Stan Wilson, Roger Chaves, Ray Domecq, the future name of the VU Baseball Field Dean Harvey, Dale Leonard, Ron Nelson, David Turney, Jim Collins, future HOF member Tim Fortugno, Roland Huber, Thomas Link, Randy Redburg, Randy Conner, Terry Gaunt, Titus Houston, future Board of Trustee member Jeff Motske, Brian Otten, Mike Davidson, Howard Wellema, Barry Henderson, Randy Roether, and Pat Price.
