Women's Golf

New Hires Welcomed to VU Athletics

COSTA MESA -- The Vanguard Athletic Department would like to announce the hiring of Dr. Jane Carr as the Vanguard Director of Golf, the promotion of Shion Jahangiri to Associate Head Coach of men's soccer, and the hiring of four new assistant coaches to various programs.

Director of Golf
Dr. Jane Carr arrives to Vanguard as the new Director of Golf, and the former head coach of the Biola women's golf team is tasked with oversight of VU golf, assisting Head Coach Jeff Anderson in all facets of running the men's and women's programs.  Carr made women's golf at Biola one of the best programs on the West Coast after she arrived at the start of the 2014-15 school year.  She built the roster up from a small handful of golfers unable to field a full team for tournaments to a group with plenty of firepower that propelled the Eagles to success rapidly.  She steered the team to three first-place finishes at the PacWest Championships over the past four years, repeating as the conference champions the past two tournaments.  She was named the PacWest Coach of the Year three times (2024-25, 2023-24, and 2021-22), and she coached the PacWest Player of the Year the past two campaigns (Claire Shubin in 2024-25 and Brady Turnquist in 2023-24).  The Eagles reached the NCAA DII Regional three times over the last four years and had two ninth-place finishes and one finish in 10th at that step.  Her 2021-22 team set a single-round program-best of 288 (even par), and her 2018-19 team set multiple records for single-round and year-round scoring.  With plenty of her charges owning top spots in the Biola record book and no team finish below third in either the PacWest or the Golden State Athletic Conference in her 11 years at BU, Carr and Anderson will join forces to try to put Vanguard in the top spot in the conference in both genders.

Jahangiri to Associate Head Coach
Entering his eighth season overall at Vanguard, Jahangiri has been elevated to the role of Associate Head Coach in partnership with Head Coach Jesus (Chuy) Miramontes. Jahangiri has been with the Lions for three years after his return in 2022, as he served as the goalie coach from 2015-19, and the coaching duo has ambitions to take the fourth-place finish in the PacWest (8-4-3 overall) from 2024 and make that the baseline for the program entering 2025.  Jahangiri helped the Lions to winning records in the past three campaigns, with 2022 being the best with a 10-5-3 mark and a trip to the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round, and the squad has not had a finish below fourth since his return.  The Lions have tallied nine all-conference players in that span, including Aidan Hay being named the Pacific West Conference Goalie of the Year last fall.  In addition to Hay, Jahangiri helped two other VU goalies, Brandon Gomez and Haley Magana, earn all-conference and NAIA recognition in his first coaching.  As a result of good defense, the Blue and Gold did not finish below third in the GSAC between 2015-2019.  Along with assisting at VU, Jahangiri has coached at Mater Dei, his club team, the Pateadores, and holds a US Soccer A license.  At the professional level, Jahangiri worked with Louisville City at a volunteer to help the USL Championship side during training camp and from afar with the coaching staff with post-game analysis.

"I'm incredibly honored to step into the role of Associate Head Coach at Vanguard University," expressed Jahangiri.  "It's a blessing to be part of a program with such passion, purpose, and potential. I am excited for a new season and to give everything I've got to help our student-athletes grow on and off the field."

"I am excited to promote Shion to Associate Head Coach," added Miramontes.  "Shion has done a great job in the last few years and has really grown on and off the pitch.  He continues to pour his heart into this program and he is a vital part our programs success.  God has big things in store for him."

Assistant Coaches:
Golf
Claire Shubin - Shubin has been hired as the assistant golf coach after a highly successful career in the PacWest Conference.  A four-time All-PacWest golfer, Shubin finished in the top 10 at the PacWest Championships in four of her entries into the tournament.  She is the reigning PacWest Player of the Year and helped Biola capture the PacWest title in the team's final season.  Before moving to Biola, Shubin spent five years at Dominican, where she won the PacWest individual title in 2022.  She was DUC's Female Student Athlete of the Year that season and was the PacWest Scholar Athlete of the Year as well.  With plenty of collegiate experience to draw upon, Shubin also boasts five years of experience as an assistant professional golf instructor in the Bay Area and will be an immense resource for the Lions in their first year of full membership in the NCAA DII.

"I am so excited to join Vanguard and be a part of a close-knit, Christian community," relayed Shubin.  "I have been looking forward to becoming a golf coach throughout my time as a student-athlete, and I am so happy to have this opportunity this year."

Women's Volleyball
Bryndon Paulsen - Paulsen joins Head Coach Jennifer Dorn for the 2025 season after spending four years at Clarke University, an NAIA school in Dubuque, Iowa.  Paulsen went 79-44 at Clarke and the squad produced 24 All-Heart of America Athletic Conference selections and one NAIA All-American during the 2018-2021 campaigns.  The Pride had a winning record in the Heart each season, peaking with a 13-5 mark in 2019.  Prior to Clarke, Paulsen coached at Manchester University in North Manchester, Indiana, turning a 5-22 program around and setting a school record with 18 wins in a season and a trip to the conference semifinal.  He graduated from Clarke with a degree in kinesiology and physical education while playing on the men's volleyball team before coaching as a graduate assistant at Western Illinois.

"Having known Bryndon for a long time, I'm thrilled he is on board with us," said Dorn.  "He has a wealth of experience, having had both assistant and head coaching roles in his career, and he will bring a fun and inviting way to coach the sport.   He is incredibly supportive of our mission to come alongside our athletes in both sport and faith.  I'm excited for him to join and experience the PacWest as we battle for a top-four finish in order to compete in our inaugural PacWest Tournament this season."

Softball
Katy Hurley - Hurley follows new VU Head Coach Nicole Thomas over from Mater Dei to Vanguard to become the lead assistant coach.  The Monarchs finished second in the Trinity League in 2025 and MDHS got as high as 26th in the state rankings.  The 2024 squad made the semifinals of the CIF Tournament in addition to qualifying for the first round of the state tournament.  As a player, Hurley hit .340 in three seasons at Pomona-Pitzer, though her totals could have been higher if COVID had not wiped out the 2021 season.  Hurley had 67 hits in 197 at-bats, with five home runs, 16 doubles, and 47 RBI.  All of her 2022 offensive totals except batting average were career-highs, and she started in every game that season, concluding the campaign with a Second Team All-SCIAC selection.  After her time as a player, Hurley moved to Connecticut for two years for a graduate program at Wesleyan University in Middletown.  There, she coached the WU team and local travel ball teams while getting her master's in liberal studies.  Returning to California, Hurley joined Coach Thomas at Mater Dei High School and then at SoCal Sting, a travel ball organization started by Thomas and Maddy Grimm, where she had responsibilities with the U18-U10 levels.

"I am absolutely thrilled to welcome Katy to our coaching staff," offered Nicole Thomas.  "As a fierce competitor during her collegiate playing days, and with several years of college coaching under her belt, she brings invaluable experience to our program. Her proven ability to recruit and develop talent, combined with her expertise in scouting and on-field strategy, makes her the perfect addition to our team. Just as importantly, her deep faith and commitment to the Lord align beautifully with the mission and values of Vanguard University."

Women's Soccer
Noanne Rosse - Rosse joins Head Coach Emily Reynolds for the 2025 season after two seasons coaching at Delta State in Cleveland, Mississippi.  She was a graduate assistant for the DII program and helped in the areas of scouting, player development, recruiting, and camp management.  She helped the Lady Statesmen improve to a 4-3-5 mark in 2024 in the Gulf South Conference, finishing 6th and making the conference tournament.  While Mississippi is far from California, Rosse knows the PacWest well as she spent all four of her playing years at Azusa Pacific while getting her degree in biology.  The center-midfielder helped the Cougars to winning records during her stay in Azusa, peaking in 2021 with an 11-5-1 mark.  She holds a US Soccer National C License.

"I'm very excited to be joining Vanguard," she said.  "It's a place that values community and development.  The support since joining from the staff has been incredible.  I'm very thankful for this opportunity to work alongside Coach Emily in this new era and can't wait to start competing!"
