GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Transfer
Theresa Shaw blazed her way to her first victory as a member of the Vanguard women's golf team, as she claimed the RJGA Shootout crown today. Shaw (141, 69-72) beat out Joshlyn Ayala of CSULA (142, 70-72) and Kiara Hernandez of CSUSM (142, 74-68) by one shot to take the victory, as the Lion finished the tournament three-under par. Shaw becomes the fifth individual to win a tournament for the Blue and Gold, and it is the sixth time a Vanguard golfer has claimed the top spot in program history. VU placed 12th as a team (636, 316-320), while CSUSM won the team trophy (579, 294, 285).
The Course: Challenging, yet forgiving, is the motto behind the Nicklaus designed course. The course blends in with the local environment while sand traps make the desert fell even more in play. The course is 7,139 yards at its maximum length and is a par 72.
What Happened? Shaw was the only golfer to hit in the 60s during the first round, as her 69 proved to be the second-best round of the two-day event, with Hernandez's round of 68 the only other sub-60 round this week. Shaw was tied for the best performance on par-three holes (-1), tied for second on par-four scoring (+1), tied for fifth on par-five scoring (-3), tied for fourth with seven birdies, and tied for seventh with 25 pars.
Also appearing for the first time in Vanguard colors were
Kaitlin Anderson and
Rylee Salas-Hubbard, who both tied for 54th with scores of 162. Anderson had identical rounds of 81 and Salas-Hubbard went 83-79.
Shanaya Neru placed 66th for the event, with tallies of 83 and 88 for 171 strokes in total.
Brooke Carpenter ended the event in 72nd, with a score of 183 (93-90).
What was Said? "I am so proud of how these ladies fought in the heat on a tough course this week. This group has such a great foundation and so much potential for this year, and I can't wait to see what we can do," said Assistant Coach
Claire Shubin. "Also, I am so happy to see Theresa get her first college win! I knew it was a matter of when and not if, and to start the season off this way is just a sign of what's to come for her."
What's Next? The Lions travel to the Wasatch Invite, hosed by Westminster (Utah), over September 21-22.
