Shaw Narrowly Misses Podium

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Vanguard women's golf ended the 2026 Pacific West Conference Tournament in sixth, as the team moved up a pair of spots on the final day.  VU's Theresa Shaw started the event near or in the lead and eventually finished tied for fourth as the top placer on the team.  Hawaii Hilo won the women's team championship, shooting 895 (+31) after three rounds.  Westmont's Hannah Camara won the individual laurel as she shot an even 216 (68-74-74) by the end of Wednesday.  The Lions were fourth in total pars (156) as a team, with UHH at the top with 168.

The Course:  Set at over 7,000 yards from the furthest tees, and set as a par-72, the course runs through a community but lets the not-too-distant arroyo creep into play, giving the participants unique angles and lies.  Two water features guard two holes, but the course is otherwise straightforward and invites plenty of golfers to set season-best scores.  Gary Panks designed the course, which is one of the newer ones in the area, as the facility opened on December 5, 2003.

What Happened? Shaw was even with a 72 on her first round, one of three players to do so on Monday, with 16 pars, one birdie on the sixth hole, and one bogey.  Camara shot a 68, and Kim Penzold of Menlo put down a 70 to complete the top of the leaderboard, and those turned out to be the best scores of the entire tournament, as no one went under par again after Monday.  Shaw put down similar rounds of 74 over the next two days, and while others faltered, no one could make up any ground on the top two.  Shaw had two birdies to help counter four bogies on Tuesday, and had one of each on Wednesday.  She led all players with 43 pars, topping UHH's Elle Otani by four, and she was in the top five in performance on par-four holes (+5) and par threes (-2).   She becomes the highest finisher in VU's short history at the PacWest Championships and is the third player all-time to finish in or tied for fourth at a conference tournament.  The best finishes in Vanguard women's history are Kamryn Keller's second-place showing in 2021 and Malia Kiger's third-place result in 2019.

Kaitlin Anderson shot a 239 for the event, with scores of 79-80-80 to place in 26th.  She had one birdie on the 15th hole during round one, one on the 14th on round three, and 11 pars on each round.  Her finish in 26th was her highest placement in 2025-26  Rylee Salas-Hubbard ended tied for 28th (a season-best) with 242 strikes (+26), and after a birdie on the 17th and nine pars, she concluded day one with an 82.  She then had equal scores of 80 the next two rounds, with a birdie on the 14th hole on Tuesday and 11 pars and a birdie on the fourth hole and 10 pars today.

Brooke Carpenter ended tied for 32nd with 245 strokes (+29) and lowered her score each day.  Her 84 on day one saw her pocket a birdie on the second hole and 10 pars, while two birdies (eighth and ninth holes) and nine pars put her at 80 on Tuesday.  She was a par machine during her last round, picking up 14, including eight in a row to tally a 79.  Her placement was her best of the season, and her final round was a season-best score.  Arabella Mishek got the nod to start the event and delivered a 91 on Monday.  Grace Kiger swapped in for the next two rounds and had results of 94-92.  Mishek had six pars on Monday, while Kiger had four on Tuesday and seven on Wednesday.

What was Said?  "I'm very proud of our teams as we battled some tough conditions, especially Theresa and Kyle.  We are excited to continue to work hard and be ready for the 2026 Fall season," said Head Coach Jeff Anderson.

What's Next?  The Lions wait to hear if Shaw got an at-large bid to the NCAA Regional Tournament.
