Shaw Close to Back-to-Back Wins for Women's Golf

SOUTH JORDAN, Utah -- The Vanguard women's golf team almost had a back-to-back winner today, as Theresa Shaw led during round two of the Wasatch Invite hosted by Westminster University.  Shaw valiantly worked her way through the 18th hole, but two players from the hosting Griffins clipped her by one shot to leave Shaw in third.  VU placed 10th out of the 11 teams present, finishing behind four Pacific West Conference schools.

The Course:  With an overall length of 6,815 yards, the Glenmoor Golf Club offers some mild traps and hazards, but the elevation changes, narrow confines, and some tight turns are the hardest part of the course.  Set as a par 72, the event was plagued with scattered storms and other weather that made conditions tough and caused an almost hour delay on Monday.

What Happened?  Shaw had birdies on the first and eighth holes during round one, and with 13 pars, ended the day with a round of 73, putting her in fourth.  She was leading at times on Monday, using three birdies to stay close to the leaders, but her second-day tally of 75 put her in third with 148 total strokes.  Shaw ended the event tied for third with five birdies and tied for fourth on par-four performance.  Kaitlin Anderson was tied for 41st and had 165 shots after two days. Her first round of 84 saw Anderson net eight pars and she gathered 11 more on Monday to bring her score down to 81.

Tied for 48th was Shanaya Neru, who had rounds of 84 and 85 for 169 strokes for the tournament.  Neru birdied the 18th hole on day one and registered seven birdies before putting in eight more pars on day two.  One shot behind, and tied for 53rd, was Rylee Hubbard.  She had rounds of 84 and 86 and also birdied the 18th hole during round one while snagging 12 pars over the course of the event.  Tied for 63rd was Brooke Carpenter, who shot 190 over both days (100-90).  She had 10 pars over the duration of the Wasatch Invite.

What was Said?  "I'm very proud of the women's efforts and we definitely battled some adversity, perservering through some tough playing conditions," said Head Coach Jeff Anderson.  "I'm really happy with the way we are trending, highlighted by Shaw's runner-up finish.  We have some work to do, but we will be ready."

What's Next?  The Lions have a couple of weeks of practice at home before heading east for the NCAA Regional Preview event hosted by the Colorado State Pueblo.
