SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Vanguard baseball went 0-2 at Point Loma yesterday to open the Pacific West Conference series against the #15 team in the most recent poll. Vanguard lost 10-0 and 16-1, dropping to 4-13 overall and 1-10 in conference play. PLNU improved 14-3, 10-0.
What Happened?
The Lions got three hits in the first game, coming from the bats of
Jaxson Davis,
Joshua Sur, and
Tristan Gallegos, though the squad left seven runners on the base paths during the contest.
Jake Hiner recorded four strikeouts in five innings, dropping to 1-4 as he was charged for five of the seven runs he allowed.
Trevor Steele threw just over two innings and got one K. PLNU used seven runs to tally 10 runs, with the hosts leading 7-0 after two.
The Sea Lions used 13 hits to register 16 runs in game two, including a monstrous 10-run frame in the bottom of the fifth. Vanguard finally tallied its lone run of the day in the top of the third as
Tyler Shigenaka powered a home run over the fence. However, only
James Derflinger had another hit in the ball game for the Lions.
Braden Turner had the only VU strikeout in the game, with
Daniel Rivera,
Jacob Cuculich, and
Khoi Anderson all dealing for VU in the twin bill.
