Lions Ground Golden Eagles For Season Sweep

IRVINE, Calif. – Morgan Cole posted her 10th double-double of the season with 16 kills and 21 digs as Vanguard earned a four-set PacWest women's volleyball victory over CUI on Wednesday evening.

The 25-23, 25-19, 20-25, 25-20 win secured the season sweep over the Golden Eagles and lifted the Lions to 12-11 overall, 9-10 in the PacWest. CUI dropped to 16-12 and 11-9 in conference play.

Cole had her fourth match with at least 20 digs this season. She owns a current streak of seven straight contests with double-digit digs. In addition, she sits just 31 digs shy of hitting the 1,000 mark for her career.

Bailey Olbur registered 11 kills on .476 hitting, committing just one error in 21 swings. She also notched a match-high five blocks, including two solo stuffs.

Both Lion setters recorded double-doubles. Madeline DeLucia had 22 assists and 12 digs to go along with a match-high four service aces. With 171 service aces, she is four shy of setting the Vanguard career record.

Lim tallied 21 assists, 10 digs and an ace – one of 12 as a team the Lions had from the service line.

Blair Dodge and Jenesis Rios totaled 14 and 10 digs, respectively. The Lions were outstanding defensively with five players posting double-digit digs.

VU hit .213 as a team compared to .191 for CUI.

The Lions won at CUI for the first time since 2003.

What Happened?

Set 1 – The Lions got off to a roaring start with a 4-0 lead as DeLucia plopped down aces on two of the points. The Golden Eagles fought back, scoring eight of the next 11 points to grab their first lead at 8-7.

Three consecutive points from VU wrested the lead back at 10-8 as Cole put down one of her five kills in the set.

The score was tied three times before a 5-1 run gave the Lions a 19-15 advantage. Cole had a kill and an ace to help provide the Blue and Gold with some cushion. Payton Darm and Olbur garnered kills to get VU closer at 22-19, but four straight Golden Eagle kills earned the home side a one-point lead.

Threatened with giving up a late lead, the Lions stabilized and scored the final three points for the 25-23 win. VU was aided by a CUI service error and attack error, with Cole applying the finishing touches with a kill.

VU hit .261 (13-1-46) in the set, while CUI had a .188 (15-6-48) percentage.

Set 2 – VU sped out to a 5-2 lead, but CUI responded with a 7-1 run to go up 9-6. The Lions caught CUI at 10-10, helped along by a Delaney Hill kill and another DeLucia ace.

The Lions trailed for the final time at 11-10 before reeling off four straight points for the 14-11 lead. CUI crept within one point on four separate occasions before another 4-0 VU run opened up a 22-17 cushion. Olbur had a solo roof on Caitlin Jarrell and a kill to bring VU closer to the two sets to none lead.

Rios landed her second service ace on set point to close out the 25-19 victory.

VU swung at a .243 clip, while CUI had .133 efficiency.

Set 3 – CUI was not about to go quietly on its Senior Day, and pushed out to an 8-4 lead thanks to three early kills from Kennedy Farley.

The Lions answered with a 6-2 run to level things at 10-10, with Alister Borabo providing a pair of kills. Farley added another kill to hand back the lead to CUI, and the Golden Eagles eventually opened up a 16-13 advantage.

VU tied the score at 16 apiece following a Cole kill, Dodge ace and Adeline Galvanoni putaway. The score remained tied at 17-17 and 18-18 before the Golden Eagles took control with a 6-0 run. Farley started the late push with back-to-back kills, followed by three straight Lion attack errors.

Farley secured the 25-20 triumph with a slam.

CUI hit a match-best .333 (16-4-36) in the set and held VU to .077 (11-8-39) efficiency.

Set 4 – The Lions fell behind 9-6, plagued by four attack errors early on.

But VU eventually tied the score at 10-10. Olbur got involved with a pair of kills, and teamed up with Galvanoni to stuff Kayden Croy.

That signaled more back-and-forth as the two teams fought through five ties to get to 15-15.

The Lions defense went to work and stymied CUI, leading to a 6-1 run. The Lions built a 21-16 cushion as Galvanoni notched back-to-back kills.

The run eventually became 9-2 as VU got to match point at 24-17 thanks to Olbur's solo block on Croy. CUI fended off three straight match points to pull within 24-20, but Galvanoni ended the threat with a kill for the 25-20 VU triumph.

VU had its best showing in hitting .263 (15-5-38) and limited CUI to a .116 (12-7-43) effort.

What Was Said?: "We are playing our best ball this season the last two matches," said Head Coach Jennifer Dorn. "We are continuing to elevate our game even as we close down our season. Across the board we are simply competing for each point and that allows us to have short memories and move past errors quickly. We were firing on all cylinders tonight and that's what it takes to win in the PacWest. Very proud of this win."

What's Next?: Vanguard will honor eight seniors on Saturday in its season finale at the Freed Center. The Lions host Academy of Art for a 2:00 p.m. first serve.
