COSTA MESA -- Vanguard baseball lost the opening Pacific West Conference series game to Hawaii Pacific 17-3 in seven innings on Thursday, dropping to 11-28 overall and 8-25 in conference games. HPU improved to 21-17, 19-13.
What Happened? The Sharks had a 10-0 lead after two frames, and it was not until the fourth that the Blue and Gold scored.
Bennett Vondrak led off with a single, and got to second on a wild pitch. A
Tristan Gallegos single brought him home, and Gallegos soon got to second on another wild pitch.
Angel Perez worked a walk, and a double by
Tyler Shigenaka cashed in Gallegos. The third wild pitch of the frame got Perez home, putting the gap at 10-3. VU held HPU scoreless for four frames, but a huge seven spot in the seventh inning powered the Sharks to the early win.
The Sharks had 17 runs on 16 hits, while the Lions had three runs, six hits, all from different players, and two errors.
Trevor Steele got his first career start and dropped to 0-1.
Colton Perez had three strikeouts to lead the team.
What's Next? The Blue and Gold play a doubleheader against HPU tomorrow at noon.
