COSTA MESA -- The final game of the Pacific West Conference baseball series between Vanguard and Chaminade University of Honolulu went to the visitors, as the series ended at two games apiece. VU got a career start from
Jake Hiner, but the offense could not generate any runs after the fourth inning to fall 3-2. VU dropped to 11-27 overall and 8-24 in PacWest action, while Chaminade improved to 9-31, 7-27.
What Happened? Hiner pocketed two clean innings and three strikeouts to commence the matchup, but Chaminade then knocked down three runs on three hits and a VU error in the third. After a single and a double did the damage, Hiner set the next three CUH hitters down in order, and the offense worked a pair of runs back for Hiner in the fourth.
An error by the Silverswords allowed
Jaxson Davis to reach, with
Angel Perez's second single of the day putting runners at the corners.
Colton Perez was hit by a pitch, which loaded up the bases, and another mistake by CUH on a bouncer to third got the initial VU tally across the plate. A walk to
Evan Avitia made it 3-2, which unfortunately proved to be the final scoring play of the game.
CUH pitching did not give up another hit the rest of the game, and the Lions could not take advantage of the two walks they got down the stretch. Hiner only had the wobble in the third as his downfall, as he otherwise tossed a lovely game. After 120 pitches, he had a complete game in the book for the first time in his career while also tallying a career-high eight Ks, though he dropped to 1-7. Chaminade had seven punchouts as a team.
Angel Perez had VU's two hits in the contest, while CUH had seven. Both teams had three errors.
What's Next? The next school up is fellow Honolulu-based Hawaii Pacific, with the four-game set starting Thursday with a 2:30 p.m.
