VU Completes Sweep of Silverswords

HONOLULU, Hawaii – Freshman guard Micaela Hanning had another strong performance in her debut season, helping Vanguard (10-2, 6-1) complete the season sweep of Chaminade (0-10, 0-6) with an 83-47 throttling.

Hanning led the way in points (16), rebounds (7), and steals (6) on an efficient 50% from the field. The six thefts one-ups her career-best she set in the PacWest opener against Menlo in December.

Emma Schaaf followed suit with 14 points, with her lone rejection on the night making it nine straight games with a block. Kaylee Byon accounted for six assists to make it her fourth contest in a row with at least six helpers.

As a team, VU made a third of their attempts from downtown on 24 attempts. The number-one ranked defense in the PacWest also forced 28 Silversword turnovers once again, having done so in their first matchup in December.

Chaminade only had two players score in double-figures, and the Lions held CUH to single-digits in both the second- and third-quarter.

What Happened?:

Coming off an upset-loss to Concordia five days ago, Vanguard made sure there would be no pomp to the circumstances this evening, taking control of the game right away.

Coach Russ Davis elected to tweak the starting lineup, offering Aryanna Hudson just her fourth career start. She rewarded the nod with a triple in the first 40 seconds on a pass from Kaylee Byon. After Chaminade scored four straight for their first lead, it would be all Vanguard the rest of the way.

A 13-0 run for the Blue and Gold was punctuated by an Emma Schaaf and-one to make it 16-4, before Akilah Kubi made her mark with an immediate steal, as she seems to do routinely. Despite numerous fouls being called to bring the game to a crawl, Vanguard kept the tempo up to force six turnovers in the first quarter alone, before a Kaylee Byon dime to Shayla O'Neil made it 25-14 after one.

The first seven minutes of the second quarter saw the tenacious defense remain, with the Lions refusing to allow a point in that span. All the while, the offense put up 16 points with Jaryn Madsen knocking down one of her two threes, coming off the bench for the first time this season. Ultimately, Vanguard would outscore CUH 17-5 in the period.

The rest of the game was much of the same, as the final result was never in doubt. Coach Davis did have to burn a timeout early in the 3rd quarter to refocus the squad, but they rewarded the bench boss by extending the lead to 35 with 1:08 left in the frame.

In the 4th, Hudson would give VU their largest lead of the night on a pull-up jumper to make it 83-39, before the dogs were finally called off.

Of note: Redshirt-Freshman Braelynn Yakubik made her Vanguard debut in the last two minutes.

VU is now 3-0 all-time against Chaminade, with the two wins this season both coming by 30+.

What Was Said?: " Always hard to play In Hawaii with the travel and distractions " said Head Coach Russ Davis. "Tonight we did a good job of locking in and competing. I liked how we shared to ball and competed with our pressure. Need to limit the fouls, though. I appreciated how hard the ladies wanted to get back on track after getting out worked in our last game. That didn't sit well with anyone on our team. Proud of our effort and team play."

What's Next?: The Lions continue the Hawaii trip, as it will be sink or swim against the Sharks of Hawaii Pacific on Thursday (6:30 PM PT).
