POMONA, Calif. -- The Vanguard men's soccer team took an early lead against the Broncos of Cal Poly Pomona Thursday night, but the hosts had other ideas. Two goals in the final 10 minutes brought CPP a 2-1 victory, as the Broncos improved to 4-1-2, while VU fell to 2-3-1.
What Happened? The action in the first 45 minutes was limited, but the Lions led on the shot clock 4-1 before the opening goal.
Shaun Im had the first chance at a shot just 40 seconds in, but it thudded off a defender. VU then handled a pair of CPP corner kicks after around the fourth minute before the next chance came to
Luke Parker, who got the first shot on goal of the game in the 23rd minute.
Kevin Abarca and
Sidney Dina had the other two shots for VU, as the Blue and Gold stood a little higher than their hosts. The hard work paid off late in the frame, as a Bronco goal kick did not get far enough down the field. The Lions countered quickly, and
Anthony Medina laid a pass in to
Adan Alvarado, who slashed it into the bottom of the net to put VU ahead in the 44th minute.
Alvarado had the first shot of the new half, but an early surge by VU was contained by CPP. It then took almost 14 minutes for the next shot to come for either side, though the next VU chance was
Juan Vazquez's effort in the 72nd minute, which missed to the left of the net. With tired legs on the pitch, the stout midfield play by both sides started to wax and more opportunities emerged. The Broncos had a 7-5 edge in shots over the final 20 minutes in a game that turned into a win for Cal Poly.
A Bronco goal kick facilitated a deep plunge into the heart of the VU defense and Clement Badger slotted home a goal in the 81st minute to level things at 1-1. Vanguard fortunes went downhill after a foul gave CPP a free kick in the 84th minute and Miguel Gonzalez pegged the top-left corner of the net to put the home side up 2-1. Vazquez had another shot in the 81st minute, but the best attempt by VU came from Alvardo, who blasted a shot on target in the 88th minute only to see the CPP keeper make the stop.
Vanguard had an 11-9 advantage in shots in the game, though both sides each had four shots on target. Cal Poly Pomona had a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Alvarado had three shots, two on target, Vazquez next with two shots., and
Aidan Hay had two saves.
Vanguard is now 0-3-1 against CPP all-time.
What's Next? Vanguard comes home for a day of rest before playing UC Merced at 1:30 p.m.
