LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Vanguard women's hoops is on a roll, and for the third week in a row, the squad has been named the Pacific West Conference Team of the Week. Vanguard went 2-0 again, extending the winning streak to eight contests. The biggest away win of the season came at Point Loma on Thursday, as the Lions won 66-56, resetting the title race in the PacWest. The Sea Lions led for under two minutes of game time throughout the contest, and 9-6 advantage for Vanguard in shots made from beyond the arc helped the team's triumph.
Micaela Hanning had 19 points to pace the field in the game, while
Kaylee Byon had 12 points and nine assists to just miss a double-double.
Down by as many as 19 points Saturday night, the Blue and Gold outscored Biola 32-26 over the second half, with a Byon floater leveling the game to force OT. While VU was getting another Byon layup to win in the waning moments of OT, CUI was completing an OT win over the Sea Lions, giving VU sole possession of first place. Byon tallied 20 points to lead all players, while
Emma Schaaf had 14 points and seven rebounds.
This is the fourth time this season that the Lions have been named the TOTW, and if the squad wins out, Vanguard will be awarded the first PacWest title in school history.
