ALISO VIEJO, Calif. – In her first career attempt running the 800 meters, senior Eryn Burke set the Vanguard indoor school record to highlight a successful day for the women's track and field team at the Soka Invitational.
Normally a decorated sprinter – and also the owner of school records in the 200 and 400 meters – Burke expanded her repertoire to the 800. She clocked two minutes, 16.65 seconds to finish second in the event, with teammate Kate Baranski (2:20.51) right behind her in third. Burke's effort put her seventh in the VU record book for the 800, combining both indoor and outdoor performances.
The Lions notched six first-place finishes, with senior Brooke Dalgity winning the 60 meter dash (7.77) and 600 meter run (1:34.21). The 7.77 in the 60 puts her fourth jn the VU record book, while she now sits at second in the 600. She came up less than a second short of breaking Eryn Burke's record (1:33.57) in the event.
Junior Elizabeth Betten was champion in the 200 meters with a time of 25.57 seconds. Senior Jessina Morales broke into the No. 10 spot in VU history with her performance in the 5000 meters, posting a 17:45.64.
The 4x400 relay team consisting of Betten, Megan Charley, Dalgity and Mary Sawczuk breezed to victory in 3:55.25.
As far as the field events, freshman Kolena Apana won the long jump with a top mark of 17.00.50 (5.19m).
The Lions competed well in a number of other events.Â
Senior Jordyn Burke placed second in the 400 meter run with a time of 58.11 seconds. Freshman Sydney Sydney notched third place in the 1000 meter run, clocking a 3:14.46. Baranski came up a couple seconds short of her PR in the 3000 meters, finishing fourth in 10:14.89.
In the weight throw, Kaylee Jones posted a top heave of 43-11.25 (13.39m) for second place, and she came in third in the shot put in 34-03.50 (10.45m). Freshman Gimena Hurtado hurled a 33-11.25 (10.34m) in the shot put for fourth place, while coming in sixth in the weight throw (38-10.50/11.85m).
What Was Said?: "We had beautiful weather conditions Saturday, and our athletes performed at a high level," said Head Coach Bryan Wilkins. "We saw loads of personal bests throughout the day and great team camaraderie. I couldn't be more proud!"
What's Next?: The Lions suit up on Saturday, February 22 at the Carl Rossi Relays in Claremont.
