LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Vanguard men's soccer enters the Pacific West Conference Tournament Thursday as the second seed after a 1-0 win over Menlo gifted the Lions their best finish in the league in year two. Now, the Blue and Gold add some awards to their successful regular season, as
Adan Alvarado was named the Player of the Year (First Team All-Conference),
Aidan Hay was named the Goalie of the Year for the second year in a row (First Team All-Conference),
Alex Martinez was named a First Team All-Conference player, and
Luke Parker was picked to the Third Team All-Conference. It is one of the biggest award hauls in program history, as VU has not had two major award winners since 2018, and it is the first time since 2023 that four players have made the All-Conference honor roll.
Alvarado led the Lions in all offensive categories, as he netted eight goals, four assists (22 points), 34 shots, 20 shots on goal, and made all four of the team's PKs. The sophomore ended the regular season fifth in the league in points, tied for sixth in goals, was 10th in shots, and third in shots on goal. Alvarado had his first career multi-goal game in 2025, scoring a brace at home against Dominican, and he set career-highs across the board. He averaged 1.29 points per game, had at least one shot in all but three games, and had 12 games of two or more shots. He enters the PacWest Tournament with his first career awards and having scored in five of the last six games, along with getting three shots in six of the last seven games. His ability to hold the ball will continue to frustrate opponents.
Hay becomes a back-to-back Goalie of the Year, a first for the Lions, and he becomes the most awarded goalie since VU keeper Brandon Gomez was selected to the All-GSAC team for four straight years. Hay has played every minute so far for the Blue and Gold, making 49 saves and owning a goals against average of 1.18. He tied for the league lead in shutouts with five, had the second-best GAA, and the fourth-best save percentage (.710). Hay faced a season-high 21 shots on the road against PLNU and made five stops to keep VU in the showdown with the eventual conference winners. He tallied a season-high seven stops at Hawaii Pacific and had eight games when he faced 10 or more shots. He helped the Vanguard defenders with his booming voice, helping the team surrender only 20 goals, the third fewest in the conference, making it two years in a row that the Lions have been one of the best defensive teams in the PacWest (fewest allowed last year). He now has a career GAA of 1.13 and 10 shutouts. With at least one game remaining, Hay is on pace to finish in the top 10 all-time in shutouts, wins, and GAA in program history.
Martinez took his play to a different level for the Lions after two years at Saddleback College and got his first PacWest selection on the First Team. He started every game for the Blue and Gold this year and played three complete games, totaling 1,088 minutes of service. While he had only seven shots, he made three of them count, as Martinez scored at Hawaii Pacific, at CUI, and at home to tie things against Biola in a game that ended 1-1. Martinez had four total shots on goal. He was a strong force for VU as a center back and linked up well with his fellow line mates and the midfielders in front of him, assisting in Vanguard's stability all year long.
Parker gets a Third Team laurel in his debut season and finished tied for second on the squad with four goals. He also had one assist to net 10 points in 2025, pairing that with 16 shots, seven on target. He had one game winner, which came when he took a rebound and slotted it home to put VU up 2-0 over CUI, a match the team won 2-1. He also scored against CSUSB for his first career goal, at Hawaii Hilo, and at Westmont. His lone assist set up the game equalizer scored by
Juan Vazquez at home against UC Merced, and he had a season-high three shots at home against Biola. Starting in all but the first game of the season, Park has logged 1,198 minutes so far and will see more tomorrow against the Vulcans.
