STUNT Goes 1-1 On Second Day in Texas

DENTON, Texas. -- Vanguard STUNT ended the Texas Women's University Tournament on Saturday with a split to conclude the event at 3-1.  The Lions made its fifth shutout in a row by blanking Trevecca Nazarene 21-0 but the squad fell to Dallas Baptist University 14-10.  The Lions will leave Texas with a 6-2 record overall.

What Happened?  Vanguard met Trevecca early in the morning and the Trojans forced two neutral routines in the first quarter of partner stunts.  But VU took the other two to lead 2-0 after the opening frame.  The Lions were the better team in the second quarter of pyramids and tosses and the third quarter of jumps and tumbling, with the Blue and Gold taking all four points in each period. Ahead 10-0 entering the merged routines of the fourth quarter, Vanguard got almost every point in the final frame to take a 21-0 victory.  Isabella Long was the stunter of the contest for the Lions and Tenley Romberger was the tumbler of the match.  Brenna Highdon helped VU get 76 points to be announced as the highest-rated player in the first meet of the day.

However, the Blue and Gold ran into its first real challenge since the Cal Baptist game against the Patriots of DBU.  The two sides each scored two points in the first quarter and the Lions trailed for the first time five games as the Patriots won the second frame 2-1.  But the Blue and Gold regrouped after halftime and dominated the third, flipping the scoreboard with a 4-1 mark.  Ahead 7-5, the Lions worked hard in the fourth, but Dallas Baptist snagged the period 9-3 to win 14-10.  Ysabella Hernandez was the highest-rated player for Vanguard with 46 points, with Grace Hartanov the stunter of the game and Melina Torres was the tumbler of the game.

What was Said?  "We had a great weekend of games in the Lone-Star State, our Lions look strong," said Head Coach Leslie Allen.

What's Next?  The Lions will travel to Fullerton for a single game against Hope International on March 7 at 7:00 p.m.
