FRESNO, Calif. -- Vanguard STUNT began the West Tournament today and ended pool play with a 1-1 mark, falling to Jessup 29-5 but beating Northwest Nazarene 26-14. The split puts VU in the middle of the pack, but the Blue and Gold can get to the title match with a win over CUI tomorrow at 11:00 a.m.
What Happened?
Jessup got all four points in the first quarter of partner stunts and the second period of pyramids and tosses to surge ahead 8-0. JU almost swept all three frames, but VU snared a point in the third period of jumps and tumbling to trail 13-1 entering the fourth. Jessup had a 16-4 edge in points in the combined routines of the final quarter to collect the win.
Against NNU, it was Vanguard that got to flex its muscles some, as the Blue and Gold took the first quarter 6-4. It was closer in pyramids and tosses, as the Lions edged out a 3-2 win to enter halftime ahead 9-6, and third period was slightly tilted to VU as well, as a 4-3 decision put Vanguard ahead 13-9 entering the final interval. However, the Lions were able to create some breathing space by taking the fourth 13-5 to close out the match and take a 26-14 victory.
