FULLERTON, Calif. -- Vanguard STUNT began the 2024 season on Friday night by taking part in the first day of competition at the Hope International Tournament. The Lions went up against Arizona State (club team) and the reigning powerhouse, Cal Baptist. In two very different games, VU beat the Sun Devils 22-6 before falling to CBU 24-4. VU will open the new season at 1-1.
What Happened? The Blue and Gold were near-perfect against ASU in the opening two quarters, netting almost eight points in all. In the first quarter of partner stunts, the Lions would win 4-1, the same score VU posted in the second quarter of pyramids and tosses. Ahead 8-2 at the break, the Lions would continue to work effectively, taking the third period of jumps and tumbling 3-1. But though ASU had snuck a few points off the Lions, Vanguard would have none of it in the fourth quarter.
When all the routines came together in the final frame, the Lions collected 11 points to ASU's three to take the game 22-6.
Melea Altermatt was the stunter of the game for VU,
Taumiana Owensby was the tumbler of the game, and
Grace Hartanov was the highest-rated player for the Lions with 48 points
Game 2
CBU took the first routine of the opening period, but the Lions responded by taking the second routine. The Lancers took the next six routines, but VU did enough to get a point right before halftime to trail 8-2. However, CBU has not lost, ever, and they continued their winning ways. VU got one point in the third and fourth quarters to show their mettle, but CBU would win 24-4.
The Lions had
Rebecca Im as the stunter of the game,
Ysabella Hernandez was the tumbler of the game, and
Alexis Jimenez was the highest-rated player with 57 points.
What's Next? The Lions will return to Fullerton tomorrow to face Arizona Christian and OUAZ.
