Vanguard Golf Takes Part at La Verne Invite

CORONA, Calif.  -- The two Vanguard golf teams competed at the La Verne University Leopard Spring Invitational Monday and Tuesday and the women placed third out of four teams, with the men placing fifth out of six teams.  Charles Thurston and Brooklyn Motske were the top finishers for the Lions, with Motske tied for third and Thurston ending tied for 12th.

The Course:  The Dos Lagos Golf Course sits across from Interstate 15 in the southern end of Corona.  The scorecard is set as a par 70 and the course reaches a maximum distance of 6,544 yards.  Two big lakes wrap around three of the holes and there are some narrow fairways due to the valley that the course runs through.

What Happened?  The women for the Blue and Gold had a 667 for the event, while Claremont-Mudd-Scripps paced the field with 608 strokes over the two rounds that were played.  Cal Lutheran was second with 637 strokes and the hosting Leopards were fourth with 680 shots.  CMS had the first two steps on the podium, with Esther Lee winning by shooting even par at the end of Tuesday's action.

Motske had a two-day tally of 149 (73-76) to tie Stella Cheng of CMS in third, as the duo were nine shots over par each.  She now has had back-to-back top-five finishes and her round of 73 on day one is a season-best.  Shyla Tigilau was up next for the Lions in 16th with a grand total of 165 strokes (85-80).  Zoee Lynch was 19th at the conclusion of the tournament with a score of 170 (87-83).  Shanaya Neru ended 24th with a 185 (94-91) and Arabella Mishek was a few strokes behind her at 188 (92-96) in 25th.

The men's tournament was won by La Verne with 579 strokes, with Cal Lutheran second with 586.  The Lions were fifth with 615 shots over the two rounds, edging out Providence Christian by four strokes.

Thurston tied Brenden Borck of George Fox University (Ore.) at eight-over par (148, 77-71) in 12th.  Rex Robinette followed for the Blue and Gold in 19th with 153 shots (80-73) for the event.  Charles Gulbe ended in 24th with a 156 (79-77) and Matthew Wilkes placed 28th with a total of 158 (80-78).  Kasey Dilger rounded out the VU lineup and notched a 166 (79-87) to finish in 32nd.

What's Next?  The men's team will travel up north for the Jessup Spring Invite on March 4-5, while the women will take part in the CLU Regals Invitational on March 11-12.
