WAIMEA, Hawaii -- The second half of the Hawaiian road trip for the VU women's golf team saw the players participate in the Southwest Airlines HPU Sharks Shootout the past two days. The Lions finished with 639 shots after two rounds (318-321), placing the team in 12th out of the 15 teams present. CSU San Marcos won the team trophy with 579 strokes and the Cougars were the only team to have a round under par as a squad (283). CSUSM also had the individual champion in Madison Murr, who concluded the tournament six under par (67-71, 138).
The Course: The North Course at Mauna Lani is another beautiful location for a round of golf on the Big Island. Set on rolling terrain that eventually dips down to the sea, the grass stands in stark contrast to fields of lava rocks that surround the holes. The course has a maximum yardage of 6,913 yards from the back tees and is a par 72.
What Happened? Leading the lineup for the Lions was
Brooke Carpenter, who finished tied for 25th with rounds of 77 and 74 for 151 strokes. She had 10 pars and two birdies on Friday and 14 more pars on Saturday, with her round of 74 becoming her best round of the year.
Shanaya Neru was next for the Blue and Gold in a tie for 36th with 156 shots (76-80). She deposited 11 pars and two birdies on day one and sunk one birdie and 12 pars on her second tour of the course.
Brooklyn Motske tied for 58th after the event ended with rounds of 82 and 79 for a total of 161. She snagged one birdie and nine pars on day one and followed that up with 11 more pars on Saturday.
Shyla Tigilau ended in 70th for the tournament with 171 shots (83-88). She collected seven pars and two birdies on day one and had one more birdie and three pars on the final day.
Arabella Mishek was 72nd after the action ended on Saturday with 178 strokes after rounds of 88 and 90. She had 11 pars over both rounds and a birdie on the fifth hole on day two.
What Was Said? "Very proud of the way both teams battled against very tough fields here in Hawaii," relayed Head Coach
Jeff Anderson. "We had some great individual performances, with
Brooke Carpenter pacing the women's team. We are looking forward to the off-season, but we will continue to prepare for the spring portion of the season."
