WAIMEA, Hawaii -- The Dennis Rose Collegiate Challenge for Vanguard women's golf saw the squad place 10th out of the 15 teams in the competition. The Lions ended +53 for the event with scores of 320-309 for 636 total strokes. 11 shots behind Western Washington in ninth. The University of Missouri at St. Louis won the team title with a total score of 591 (298-293), but Madison Murr of Cal State San Marcos won the individual trophy, as she was the only golfer to go under par for the event at -7 (69-68, 137).
Shanaya Neru was the Lions' top placer as she ended tied for 19th with nine other players at 152 after two rounds.
The Course: The Village Course at Waikoloa was designed by Robert Trent Jones II and is a par 72. The fairways are wide but the greens are guarded by bunkers, lakes, and some natural features that make the course fun yet challenging. Only the boundries of the course bring any of the lava rock fields into vision as the facility wraps around itself.
What Happened? Neru started her tournament with a round of 75, with three birdies and nine pars helping her finish +3 on Monday. She returned on Tuesday and collected two more birdies and 10 pars, including five pars in a row to start her second round, resulting in a round of 77 on day two. Her five birdies were four off the top mark for the tournament and tied for sixth among all players.
Back in action and in her home state,
Shyla Tigilau had a solid opening to her senior campaign as she posted scores of 79-78 for 157 shots in all to end tied for 43rd. She had nine pars and a birdie on the ninth hole on day one and kept the par train chugging on Tuesday, as she nabbed 13 during her second round, including two streaks of five in a row.
Brooklyn Motske had an 80 to start the tournament and tallied 10 pars during her opening round. She then dropped two shots during round two, as she gathered 12 pars to net a 78 and a two-day total of 158, putting her in a tie for 48th. Both Motske and Tigilau tied with 22 pars, putting them in the top third of the field in that category.
Brooke Carpenter was next in 62nd with scores of 86-76 for 162 in all. While she only had four pars and a birdie on the 12th hole during round one, she rebounded smartly on Tuesday. Slicing 10 shots off her scorecard, Carpenter put in two birdies and 10 pars to tie her second-lowest score of the season. Rounding out the VU lineup was
Arabella Mishek, who ended tied for 76th. She had four pars during round one for an 89 and three more on day two for a 94, giving her 183 strokes for the event.
