BEAUMONT, Calif. – Sehlai Purcell turned in the best performance of her young career, as the Blue and Gold freshman finished in a tie for second overall at the Vanguard Fall Invite, which wrapped up on Wednesday at the Oak Valley Golf Club.
Purcell, who held the lead after 36 holes on Tuesday, carded a 3-over 75 on the final day. Purcell shot an even 72 in both the first and second rounds. The West Hills native tied with Menlo's Rori Fanning and Jessup's Corina Shaw for second place.
Point Loma's Kiara Hernandez, who trailed Purcell by two shots entering the final round, carded a 3-under 69 to win the individual crown with an even par aggregate score of 216 (74-72-69).
Purcell compiled 11 birdies for the tournament.
Six Lions followed in the top-20, with senior Shyla Tigilau shooting a 15-over 231 (76-78-77). She had four birdies in each of the first two rounds on Tuesday.
Freshman Brooke Carpenter joined Tigilau in 11th place after she shot 77, 78 and 76 over the 54 holes on the 5,860 yard layout.Â
Emily Knox finished in 16th place at 18-over 234, and Shanaya Neru and Alle Klemkow tied for 17th with identical aggregate scores of 235. Neru overcame a tough first round on Tuesday to shoot a final round 74 on Wednesday.
Brooklyn Motske also produced a top-20 performance as she placed 20th overall at 239.
Also competing for the Blue and Gold was Annabell Le (30th place, 254) and Arabella Mishek (31st, 261).
The Lions finished fourth of six teams with their best score a second round 12-over 300. VU shot 61-over over the 54 holes. Point Loma was the team champion at 41-over.
What Was Said?: "We had some great individual performances from some of our young players which is very promising for the future," said Head Coach Jeff Anderson. "We played against a great field on a challenging course. We are ready to compete in Hawaii to end the Fall season on a good note."
What's Next?: The Lions head to the islands to take part in the Hawaii Pacific Shark Shootout in Kailua-Kona from October 21-22.
