GSAC Baseball Season Ends in Loss at SDCC
Lakeside, Calif. - Star's Field - It wasn't the way the Lions wanted to end the GSAC season, but the Hawks from San Diego Christian scored just their fourth conference win of the year in defeating Vanguard 5-3 Tuesday afternoon.
Despite picking up solo homers from shortstop Brett Siegmund and first baseman Joshua Manzano, the Lions scattered seven hits against Hawks starter Eddie Pryor (2-5) and two against reliever Ryan Fischer who went the final three innings to pick up his first save of the season.
Manzano went three-for-four on the afternoon with his second homer of the year while Siegmund's sixth homer of the year was part of a 2-for-4 day at the plate.
Designated hitter Nate Maddox broke a 1-1 tie for San Diego Christian (13-34, 4-32 GSAC) with a two-run single in the bottom of the third off of Vanguard starter Bryce Reid who was chased after giving up four runs and seven hits in 3.2 innings to drop to 1-2 on the year.
Vanguard (19-27, 13-23 GSAC) also got a multi-hit game and an RBI from second baseman Keegan Freeman, but the Lions entire offense struck out ten times on the afternoon and managed just one hit after Manzano's seventh inning homer.
Jordan Wishmyer went the final 4.1 innings in relief for the Lions giving up just one run and striking out six with no walks.
The Lions will end their season Wednesday evening at 6 pm as they travel for a non-conference tilt with Cal State Los Angeles.
