CLAREMONT, Calif. – On Saturday afternoon at the annual OIDFE Challenge, sophomore
Zachary Velasco usurped a three-year school record (Aaron Solarzano 42'0 3/4") to pencil in the best indoor triple jump in program history (43'5.25). Velasco was one of four Lion gold medalists on the day, as Vanguard men's track and field won seven medals and added 11 top 10 performances in program history.
The jump team saw Velasco and
Beau Swett landlocked in a podium finish in the high jump. Both Lions reached 6'4 3/4" in the event for the seventh-best mark in Lion history. Swett also performed well in the high jump, winning the event with a personal-best 21' 7¼", which placed him ninth all-time in the record books.
Freshman
Blake Bazaldua measured at 40'6 3/4" in weight throw, producing his best finish (sixth) as well as the second-best weight throw in Lion history.
The 60m racers were led by
Andre Hackett and
Jonathan Krynicki. Hackett sped at 6.89, locking in VU's sixth-best 60m dash, while Krynicki secured a 6.99, which sits at the eighth-best Lion time. Krynicki also competed in the 200m, claiming a podium finish with a 22.02 race to capture third place.
The Lions filled out the herd in the 600m race, with standout runs from
Cooper Anderson (1.22.01),
Isaiah Feaver (1.22.72), and
Jack Slavin (1.22.93) each putting them in third, fourth, and fifth, respectively, at the event. Anderson's time was a top-three time ever for VU, while Feaver (fifth) and Slavin (seventh) also notched top 10 finishes.
Caleb Dickerson netted bronze in the 1000m with a 2:46.89, in his first time competing in the event.
Ommar Arroyo was the best Vanguard finisher in the 1-mile run; he whistled through at 4:27.52, his personal best and the program's 10th-best time in the event.
