Box Score 2 ROCKLIN, Calif. -- Vanguard baseball left Jessup today with two defeats, as the Warriors took the first Pacific West Conference series of the season with a sweep of Saturday's games. JU won 21-7 and 3-0, improving to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in league play, while VU dropped to 4-6, 1-3.
What Happened? Though the Blue and Gold tallied seven runs, five errors and a massive Jessup offensive effort left little on the table for VU.
Jake Hiner went one inning and saw the Warriors net eight runs, though the errors left him with zero earned runs on the day. Most of the damage was done over the first three frames, with the hosts leading 18-1.
Vanguard scored in the top of the third after
Tyler Shigenaka took a two-out walk, and after VU loaded up the bases,
Colton Perez was hit by a pitch to make it 10-1, but the Lions left the bases juiced. After a pair of runs crossed in the top of the fourth for the Lions,
James Derflinger pounced for a two-run shot over the left-field fence, his third homer of the season.
Charlie Pennington lobbed a two-run ground-rule double in the top of the seventh to make it 21-7, but that was all the offense could do to cut into the large gap.
JU had 14 hits in the win, with one error and five runners left on base. VU had nine hits and seven runners left aboard. Derflinger and Pennington each had two hits to pace the side.
Caleb Lambertson had the best outing of the staff, as he dealt two scoreless frames. Hiner dropped to 1-2.
JU 3 VU 0
Perez had a single in the top of the sixth, but the Lions did not have another hit. Jessup pitching surrendered only three walks, and the Blue and Gold left two on the base paths.
Dylan Henson had a bad spell in the bottom of the second, as two singles and a double made it 1-0 JU. A passed ball and an infield single allowed two more runs to cross in the stanza, and the Warriors held their 3-0 lead through the rest of the contest. The Warriors had six hits and five runners left on base. Henson went the distance and had four strikeouts, though he dropped to 0-2.
What's Next? Then next PacWest series sees a four-game set against Westmont, with the first two at WC next Friday.
