Lions Stun Jessup, Claim Two Wins on Friday

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Vanguard Stunt cemented a day to remember as started the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Tournament yesterday.  VU took care of UC Davis 23-3 to improve to 5-8 and followed that with one of, if not the most significant, upset in VU Stunt history by defeating No. 3 Jessup 20-19 in triple-overtime to improve to 6-8.  Jessup dropped to 11-5.

What happened?   The Lions, with a near-perfect game against UC Davis, landed all four points in quarters one (partner stunts), two (pyramids and tosses), and three (jumps and tumbling), as the Aggies could not match the muscle shown by the Blue and Gold.  In the final quarter of the combined routines, the Aggies grabbed their three points in the pyramids and tosses section, but the Lions took the rest to claim a 23-3 victory.

VU 20 JU 19 - In a battle for the ages, #3 Jessup went blow for blow against Vanguard to conclude the action on Friday. Though JU had won the past nine matchups, the two sides exchanged points in every quarter.  Jessup took quarter one 2-1 but the two squads forced a couple of routines to go even in the second frame to put JU ahead 5-3 at halftime.  But unlike in previous encounters, the Lions held true to form in the third period to trim the Jessup lead to 7-6, taking the quarter 3-2.  The Blue and Gold called the right routines in the fourth quarter and took the final frame 8-7 to tie the match at 14-14.

STUNT overtime is played with quarter four routines and begins with the fourth routine, and with three points on offer for each act, the squads keeping playing up until routine eight until one side claims two of the three points.  Vanguard and Jessup were each awarded two points in the first two OT performances to bump things to routine number six.  Jessup took the partner stunt portion, but Vanguard won jumps and tumbling and pyramids and tosses to secure a huge 20-19 upset.

What was said? "Our Lions were amazing today! Playing strong and coming out with 2 wins! Taking the game into triple overtime against Jessup and coming out with the win! Awesome Moment," said Head Coach Leslie Allen.
