COSTA MESA -- Vanguard STUNT emerged with two wins tonight against local foe CUI and St. Mary's out of Texas. The Lions beat the Golden Eagles 15-13 in another close fight between the two schools before VU took care of the Rattlers 21-5. The Lions go to 3-7 on the campaign.
What Happened? The Golden Eagles took four points in the first quarter of partner stunts but the Blue and Gold drew even points on the first and third routines to trail 4-2 entering the second frame. VU was better in the next frame of pyramids and tosses, taking a 3-2 edge in points to trail 6-5 at halftime. The Lions almost earned all four points in the third quarter of jumps and tumbling but a CUI challenge on the first routine took a point off the board for Vanguard. But the home side still took the frame 3-2 to knot the match at 8-8. The fourth quarter of the combined routines was close, with CUI taking the first performance 3-2. But the tide turned when the Lions took the next routine 3-0, gaining a 13-11 lead in the process. Both sides took two points on the next act and the Lions went on to win 15-13.
VU 21 StMU 5 The Blue and Gold took all the points in quarters 1-3, though St. Mary's forced the final two routines of the third to go even to make the score 12-2 entering the final period. The two programs duked it out in the final quarter and the Rattlers took one point on the first routine and two on the third, but that was it, as the Lions banked the rest to win 21-5.
