Lions Down Golden Eagles in STUNT Rematch

IRVINE, Calif. -- The rematch between the STUNT programs of Vanguard University and Concordia University Irvine took place Tuesday night at CUI and this time, overtime was avoided.  However, that did not mean the Lions and the Golden Eagles had a boring match, as the programs exchanged points and the contest was still up for grabs in the fourth quarter.  But in the longer routines of the final frame, the Lions outperformed their counterparts to collect a 13-11 win.  Vanguard improves to 11-5 and CUI falls to 9-7.

The first quarter of partner stunts saw both teams net a point on the first routine, but the Golden Eagles then bagged points on two of the next three routines to take a 3-2 edge.  The second frame of pyramids and tosses was scored evenly in last week's game, but the Blue and Gold had figured something out in practice in the leadup to the rematch.  VU took the first three routines outright to bound into a 5-3 lead, and though each team took a point in the final act of the quarter, the Lions held a 6-4 lead at halftime.

The third quarter of jumps and tumbling was split, as the Lions and Golden Eagles collected two points aside.  VU led 8-6 to start the fourth quarter of the combined routines and then some shades of the deadlock from last week crept in.  CUI took the first routine 2-1 to level the score at 9-9 but fortunately, the tie did not last that long.  The Lions took a 13-10 lead over the next two performances and had possession (in STUNT, this means your team gets to pick what routine is called) for the final act of the night.  The Lions called routine eight and though they did not score on the jumps and tumbling portion, CUI did not score at all, and the Lions corralled a 13-11 win.

What was Said?  "We are starting to hit our stride.  It was a great game against a great opponent," said Head Coach Leslie Allen.

What's Next?  The Lions travel to Riverside on Thursday for a 7:00 p.m. match against Cal Baptist.
