STUNT Beats Mustangs and Blanks Aggies in Rocklin

ROCKLIN, Calif. -- Vanguard STUNT was busy on Saturday as the squad played both Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and UC Davis.  The Lions squabbled with the Mustangs throughout the contest but the team got some separation in the third quarter, eventually winning 14-11 before shutting out the Aggies 23-0.  The pair of wins put VU at 4-1 on the season.

What Happened?  Vanguard took the first routine in partner stunts but the Mustangs responded by snagging the second.  Tied at 1-1, the Blue and Gold pounced to take the next two points and end the first quarter up 3-1.  The teams exchanged points in the second period of pyramids and tosses, with each side netting two wins over the four routines to put VU up 5-3 entering halftime.

The Lions were very good in the jumps and tumbling quarter, as the squad won the third frame 4-1 to claim a 9-4 advantage entering the final quarter.   The long routines slightly favored the Mustangs, who scored eight points to Vanguard's five, but that was not enough for the Mustangs, as the Lions held on the win the match 14-12.

It was a different story against the Aggies, as VU showed their technical mettle throughout the contest.  The Lions earned almost maximum points in every quarter, blanking UC Davis 23-0 to make it a sweep on the day.

Why is it Important?  Vanguard lost the first two matchups against the Mustangs in the all-time series but has won the last two to level the series at 2-2. VU remains perfect against UC Davis, with this being the first shutout against the Aggies.  The Lions had allowed three points to the Aggies in the past two meetings.

What was Said?  "We came in stronger today and played great teams," said Head Coach Leslie Allen.  "We always love playing Cal Poly and have had a good series with them, while UC Davis is always a great competitor and gave us a good game.  Thanks to Jessup for hosting a good event!"

What's Next?  The Blue and Gold have one match next week, as VU will take on Hope International on March 9 in Fullerton.
