COSTA MESA -- The only home match for Vanguard STUNT brought the University of Kentucky Wildcats and the Concordia Irvine Golden Eagles to the OCC gym Wednesday night. Vanguard was not awed by an NCAA DI foe, as VU won 21-8 over the Wildcats. After honoring the lone senior on the team, Kaitlyn Prickett (SR/Garden Grove, CA), the Lions then backed that performance up with another 21-point effort, taking down CUI 21-9 to go to 9-3 on the year. CUI goes to 5-4 on the season and UK drops to 3-9.
What Happened? The Lions and the Wildcats drew even in the first quarter of partner stunts, as each side traded routine victories. The second quarter saw VU put down three flawless routines of pyramids and tosses, maneuvering out to a 5-2 lead. The two teams each earned a point on the final routine of the half, as the Lions led 6-3 at the break. The third period of jumps and tumbling saw the Blue and Gold take the first routine before UK snagged the next one. The lineups each were awarded a point in the next performance and the Lions closed the frame with a win to lead 9-5 entering the fourth. The combined routines saw VU display its quality, winning the frame 12-3 and taking the match 21-8.
The Golden Eagles beat Kentucky to start their night but the Blue and Gold took all four routines in the opening quarter to lead 4-0. VU then took two of the four routines in the second period, tying in two as well, to take an 8-2 advantage into halftime.
The third quarter opened with an even split but the Lions took the ensuing performance. CUI then took a point and both teams shared the final routine, as Vanguard led 11-5 entering the fourth. The final frame proved to be very one-sided, as the Blue and Gold finished the night with a flourish, outscoring the Golden Eagles 10-4 to take the match 21-9.
Why is it Important? This was the largest margin of victory over CUI in program history and takes the Lions to 6-7 all-time against the Golden Eagles.
What was Said? "It was a great crowd, and we are always so happy to play in front of our fans," said Head Coach Leslie Allen. "Thank you to Kentucky and CUI for coming together to make this happen. We still have a few areas we can improve on but it was a very good night on the mat overall. I am proud of the ladies for all their hard work and for two high-scoring results!"
What's Next? The Lions head to Hope for the third time this season and play the Jessup Warriors on March 31st at 5:30 p.m.
