STUNT Takes Down Gaels but Comes up Short Against Jessup

FULLERTON, Calif. -- The second day of the Hope International STUNT Tournament brought the Lions into competition against Saint Mary's and Jessup on Saturday.  VU earned a 16-1 victory over the Gaels to start in the morning but the squad could not complete a comeback against the Warriors, falling 15-12.  The Lions go to 7-3 on the season.

What Happened?  The Lions racked up four first-quarter points during partner stunts against the Gaels to lead 4-0. Even though Saint Mary's drew level in one routine during the pyramids and tosses of the second quarter, VU scored on the other three routines and led 7-0 at halftime.  The Gaels snagged their only point during the third quarter of jumps and tumbling but the Lions again claimed the rest of the points to lead 10-1 entering the final period.  The long routines favored the Blue and Gold overall, powering the Vanguard to a 16-1 victory.

The second contest of the day brought the Warriors into play, and while recent matches against Jessup have all been within three points, all of them have gone to the Warriors.  That trend continued Saturday afternoon, as JU took a 3-2 lead in the opening frame.  The Warriors then snagged four points to the Lion's two in the second, with JU taking a 7-5 advantage into the third.  VU put down some great routines in the third, coming up with a 4-2 win in the period to trail 9-7 entering the fourth.  Despite the surge in VU points, Jessup powered ahead to a 14-9 lead in the fourth and held on in the final routine to win 15-12.

Why is it Important?  The Lions are now 5-3 all-time against Jessup and 3-0 against the Gaels.

What's Next?  The Blue and Gold will host Kentucky and Concordia University Irvine on Wednesday, with matches starting at 6:00 p.m.
