Two Top STUNT Programs Faceoff in the Pit but Alma Takes the Win

COSTA MESA --  Vanguard STUNT played host to Alma College out of Michigan Sunday, as one of the original and more successful STUNT programs in the nation took on the defending NAIA Division Champions.  The Lions and the Scots played a close match, but in the fourth, Alma scored enough points to take the lead and win 12-11.  The Scots, who beat Concordia Irvine in the first game of the day, go to 6-1, while VU drops to 1-2.

What Happened? The Lions and the Scots were almost equal in the first quarter, with VU sneaking in the extra point during the partner stunts to grab a 3-2 lead.  The home side collected more points to start the second quarter, as the Blue and Gold went ahead 5-3 during the pyramids and tosses section of the event.  But just as the Lions took the lead, Alma threw down a couple of impressive performances to tie the game at 5-5 going into halftime.

Each program picked up a pair of points over the first two routines of the third frame but once more, Alma gathered the last point of the quarter.  With a strong final routine of jumps and tumbling, the Scots tup-toed out to an 8-7 advantage.

The fourth quarter got going with the Lions coming out sharper, picking up two of three points awarded during the first routine to tie the match at 9-9.  However, over the final two routines, the Scots did enough to pick up the points they need to leave with a 12-11 victory at the end of the game.  The Lions may have lost, but they join Davenport and CUI as the only teams to score double-digit tallies against the Scots so far on the season.

What was Said?  "We came out stronger and we kept in touch with the Scots the whole night," said Head Coach Leslie Allen.  "I am pleased that we were able to keep one of the best teams in the country to a low-scoring game.  But there is still work to be done.  We are continuing to build our confidence and our endurance and we will come out stronger at our next match."
