Box Score SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Vanguard women's volleyball boasted another big block on Saturday evening at No. 15 Westmont, but the Lions sustained their first loss of the season. Set scores were 17-25, 25-21, 21-25, 19-25.
What Happened?: After tallying a single-match school record 13 solo blocks and enjoying a 17.0-3.0 advantage in total blocks one night earlier against The Master's, Vanguard once again prowled the net against Westmont. The Lions were outstanding in that department with a 10.0-1.0 edge in total blocks, led by Jordon Doiron's six block assists and five more from Samantha Arellano (SR/Tulare, CA). Westmont was tough in the back row as Lilian Reininga led all players with 22 digs as part of a 58-37 team margin. Hailey Petersen (JR/Omaha, NE) led the Lions with 10 kills and no errors in 16 attempts, hitting an impressive .625. Cambria Fernandez (SR/Northridge, CA) added eight kills. Blair Dodge (FR/Aliso Viejo, CA) collected seven digs while Rachel Lim (FR/La Palma, CA) and Madeline DeLucia (SO/Happy Valley, OR) had 13 and 12 assists, respectively.
Phoebe Minch and Jessie Terlizzi paced Westmont with 13 kills apiece. Minch chipped in 12 digs for a double-double.
SET 1
Westmont used a 4-0 run to go up 15-10. A Victoria Verceles (JR/Long Beach, CA) service ace narrowed the gap to 18-15, but Westmont scored seven of the final nine points to take the 25-17 set one victory. Minch and Terlizzi combined for nine kills in the opening set.
SET 2
Vanguard posted its best offensive showing of the match in set two, hitting .333 (9-2-21) while holding the Warriors to just a .156 (14-9-32) mark. The teams went back-and-forth as the score was tied 10 times, the final time at 14-14. The Lions then went on a 6-1 charge, helped along by a Danielle Bellfi (SR/Murrieta, CA) kill and Rainena Schenbeck Chang (SR/Aiea, HI) ace for a 20-15 lead. Westmont burned two timeouts during that stretch and eventually cut the VU lead to 23-21, but a Fernandez kill and double stuff by Arellano and Doiron secured the 25-21 win. Fernandez and Petersen led VU with three kills each in the set.
SET 3
Westmont jumped out to leads of 6-1 and 9-4 before Vanguard tallied four straight to make it a 9-8 score. Westmont forced VU into nine attacking errors in the third frame and built a 20-12 lead. Undeterred, the Lions clawed back with a 7-1 run as a Petersen putaway closed the gap to 21-19. Vanguard crept to within 23-21 as Fernandez and Doiron teamed up to block Lexi Malone, but Westmont took the next two points for the 25-21 win.
SET 4
Westmont scored the first five points but Vanguard hit the steady button and fired back with an 9-2 run to take a 9-7 lead. The Warriors took back the momentum by scoring eight of the next nine points for a 15-10 advantage. Westmont still led at 20-15 when Terlizzi scored three of her team's final five points, giving the Lions the 25-19 victory.
Why Is It Important?: Vanguard's four-match win streak came to an end as the Lions fell to 1-1 in Golden State Athletic Conference play. Westmont improved to 8-5 on the year and 2-0 in the GSAC.
What's Next: Vanguard steps away briefly from GSAC action, hosting non-conference foe California Institute of Technology on Tuesday, September 14 at The Pit. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
