Vanguard Ends Regular Season on Two-Game Win Streak

ROCKLIN, Calif. – The Lions (4-4) wrapped up their 2021 season with a pair of victories on the road, earned a sweep over William Jessup University (0-8) while taking the season series 2-1 from Concordia University – Irvine (3-5). Vanguard defeated the Warriors 19-2 and then beat the Eagles 13-10.

What Happened?  The game started with WJU in possession, but after the Pride gained possession, they held a 4-0 advantage after the first quarter. Vanguard gained points on three of their four routines in the second quarter and led 7-1 at the halftime break. In the third period, the Lions earned a perfect quarter and held an impressive 11-1 edge. Vanguard then grabbed eight of the nine possible points during the team's routine to win by 17 points.

Playing their archrivals for the third time this season, the Lions opened with a 3-1 lead after the first period, but the Eagles tightened the margin to 5-4 heading into the intermission. Concordia fought all the way back to take a one-point lead heading into the final quarter. Not backing down, Vanguard scored seven of the 10 points given out to claim their second straight victory.

Why It's Important?  This is the second time the Blue and Gold have defeated the Warriors, winning by a combined 29 points. Vanguard posts a 23-23 record in four years of program history. The Pride holds winning records over Arizona State University, Sonoma State University, St. Mary's College, University of California – Berkeley, University of California – Davis, and William Jessup.

How It's Scored: A STUNT match has four quarters. The first three periods all feature four routines with the final fourth quarter containing only three routines. Quarter 1 is partner stunts, Quarter 2 is pyramids, Quarter 3 jumps and tumbling, and Quarter 4 is team routine where the previous three quarters are combined. Routines in the first three frames are worth one point each whereas, in the fourth quarter, teams can earn up to three total points. There are eight levels of routines a team can perform ranging from beginner (1) to advanced (8), with each step becoming slightly more challenging.

What They Said: Head Coach Leslie Allen - "We are so thankful for all the support from our Athletic Department and University in giving us the opportunity to play! This team is so hard working and resilient.  Our motto this year is perseverance and they showed it this weekend coming away with two wins today!"
