Vanguard Defeated in NorCal Tournament Opener

ROCKLIN, Calif. – Vanguard University (2-4) traveled north to compete in a three-game tournament hosted by William Jessup University. The action began on Friday evening by playing California Baptist University (10-0). The Lions lost 5-17 in their lone match of Day One of the Warriors Invitational.

What Happened? The Blue and Gold fell behind 4-0 after the first quarter and was trailing 8-0 entering the halftime intermission. Vanguard scored their points of the game during the opening the first two routines of the third period, but CBU tallied three in the frame. In the final quarter, VU scored one the three points on Routine 2 while the Lancers took all three points in Routine 7. Vanguard captured two of the three points in the final routine for the 12-point deficit.

Why It's Important? This is the third and final time the Pride will play the Lancers this season, losing all three by at least 12 points. Vanguard is 0-6 all-time against Cal Baptist. Neither of the two matchups scheduled for last season were completed before the COVID-19 pandemic wiped out college athletics.

How It's Scored: A STUNT match has four quarters. The first three periods all feature four routines with the final fourth quarter containing only three routines. Quarter 1 is partner stunts, Quarter 2 is pyramids, Quarter 3 jumps and tumbling, and Quarter 4 is team routine where the previous three quarters are combined. Routines in the first three frames are worth one point each whereas, in the fourth quarter, teams can earn up to three total points. There are eight levels of routines a team can perform ranging from beginner (1) to advanced (8), with each step becoming slightly more challenging.

What's Next: Saturday, March 26th against William Jessup University starting at 10:00 a.m. and Concordia University – Irvine at 11:30 a.m.
