Lions Host Season Kick-Off Tournament

COSTA MESA, Calif. – The Lions (0-2) opened play at the six game Vanguard STUNT Tournament by hosting California Baptist University (2-0). This marks the second time this week the two teams have played, with the Lancers capturing both victories. The Blue and Gold were on the wrong side of the 18-6 score.

What Happened? Play began with both teams being awarded points in the first two routines, before CBU won the final two points of the quarter. In the second period, the Lancers captured three of the four points awarded to take a 7-3 margin into halftime. The distance between the clubs increased during third frame, as Vanguard was down 10-4 entering the team routines. Cal Baptist dominated the final quarter to win by a 12-point margin.

Why It's Important? The Pride falls to 0-5 against the Lancers in program history. Vanguard is continuing to push through injuries to key players and showing grit. They will square off against their rival CUI tomorrow as well as playing WJU for the first time.

How Its Scored: A STUNT match has four quarters. The first three periods all feature four routines with the final fourth quarter containing only three routines. Quarter 1 is partner stunts, Quarter 2 is pyramids, Quarter 3 is jumps and tumbling, and Quarter 4 is team routine where the previous three quarters are combined. Routines in the first three frames average around 30 seconds each whereas the fourth quarter routines are over 90 seconds each. There are seven levels of routines a team can perform ranging from beginner (1) to advanced (7), with each step becoming slightly more challenging.

What They Said: Flyer Maggie Brown (JR/Lake Elsinore, CA) – "I am very proud of my team for being able to make last minute changes and build our culture. We have been working so hard to not only strive for perfection but to be confident and consistent. I am so excited to get back out there with my girls tomorrow and do our best."

What's Next: Saturday, February 20th against Concordia University Irvine at 9:30 a.m. and William Jessup University at 2:00 p.m.
