RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Vanguard University (0-1) was back on the mat after traveling to play at California Baptist University (1-0). The Lancers, an NCAA Division I opponent, defeated the Lions 18-5.
What Happened? After the first quarter of play, the Pride was down 3-1 to the Lancers. Entering the intermission, upon the completion of pyramids, Vanguard was trailing 6-2. A similar theme developed in the third period as the margin had grown to 9-3 favoring the home team. The final frame saw nine of the 11 points go the direction of CBU.
Why It's Important? Tonight's loss moved the Blue and Gold to 0-4 all-time against the Lancers. Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the Pride had not competed since February 9, 2020 – just under a span of 375 days. Vanguard ended last season with a blowout victory of UC-Davis and on a two-game win streak.
How Its Scored: A STUNT match has four quarters. The first three periods all feature four routines with the final fourth quarter containing only three routines. Quarter 1 is partner stunts, Quarter 2 is pyramids, Quarter 3 is jumps and tumbling, and Quarter 4 is team routine where the previous three quarters are combined. Routines in the first three frames average around 30 seconds each whereas the fourth quarter routines are over 90 seconds each. There are seven levels of routines a team can perform ranging from beginner (1) to advanced (7), with each step becoming slightly more challenging.
What They Said: Secondary Base Salonia Harper (JR/San Ramon, CA) – "We played the best game that we probably could have played to begin the year. We were very confident on and off the mat. I was very proud of the sportsmanship that we had for the other team and we will come back and get them this Friday."
What's Next: Friday, February 19th against Cal Baptist University at 5:30 p.m.
