Hawks Sweep Lions in Santee

Santee, Calif-- Vanguard women's volleyball returned to the court Saturday as they made the trip south to take on San Diego Christian.  The Lions fought hard but could not overcome the Hawks, who swept VU 25-15, 25-20, and 25-18.  VU falls to 12-10 overall and 7-9 in the Golden State Athletic Conference.  SDCC goes to 13-9 overall and 8-8 in the GSAC.

Men's Results:  Vanguard was down 3-0 in the first before a couple of errors got the Lions close.  Cambria Fernandez (SR/Northridge, CA) got the first kill of the match for VU to tie the game at 4-all but the Hawks then exploded for a 10-6 run to take a commanding lead in the set.  Down 20-8, the Blue and Gold then put some pieces back together, with Fernandez, Danielle Bellfi (SR/Murrieta, CA), Callie Bickmore (SO/Auburn, CA), and Hailey Petersen (JR/Omaha, NE) getting kills.  However, it was not enough to make a serious comeback, as the Lions fell 25-15.  VU hit .054 in the first set.

Set Two

Petersen got the first kill of the second and Vanguard showed some new confidence early in the period.  The team kept the score tied over the first couple of rallies, but the Hawks then pulled away to a 10-5 lead.  The Lions then strung together a couple of small runs to delete the deficit.  Madeline DeLucia (SO/Happy Valley, OR) and Blair Dodge (FR/Aliso Viejo, CA) each delivered aces, and a couple of kills from Fernandez and Jordan Doiron (SO/Temecula, CA) got Vanguard back to level terms at 15-15.  The next few rallies did not put any team ahead for long, but the Hawks then found another gear and sprinted off to a 23-18 advantage.  While DeLucia put in one more ace, the Hawks took set two 25-20.  VU hit .000 in the frame.

Set Three

Another hot start by San Diego Christian put the Lions down 10-2 rapidly.  Down 14-5, the Blue and Gold then seized on some momentum and rallied to the flag.  Petersen picked up a couple of kills and Fernandez added in a pair to cut the gap to five.  However, the Hawks jumped away again during the middle part of the set, going up 21-12.  VU made a short run over the last few rallies to get to 18 points but SDCC took the next two points to secure the sweep.

Vanguard hit .026 in the match while the Hawks hit .194.  Fernandez had 11 kills top the lineup, with Petersen next at seven kills.  DeLucia had 20 assists running the offense.  Fernandez and DeLucia had the most digs on the night with nine, with Rachel Lim (FR/La Palma, CA) next with seven digs.  The team had only one solo block and four block assists.

What's next?  The Lions have their last two games at home and will play next on Friday, November 12, at 7:00 p.m., against Arizona Christian, with senior day the following day against OUAZ.
