Lions End Regular Season on 10 Game Win Streak

BERKELEY, Calif. – During Day Two of the STUNT Tournament hosted by Cal, the Lions captured another pair of dominating wins by beating the University of California - Davis by 14 points and St. Mary's College in a shutout. The win streak pushes Vanguard to a record of 12-4 and they have won all but one match since February. This season, Vanguard has made great strides on the mat, bringing their overall program record to 17-15.

"I feel like winning ten games in a row shows how hard we worked this year and we really did deserve every win. Having a winning streak just justifies how amazing our team is and how we can be consistent in all that we do," remakred Katrina Ta.

Picking up right where they left off yesterday, the Pride executed at a pristine level in the first quarter taking a commanding 4-0 edge. The second frame saw the Aggies score their first point, but Vanguard still took a 7-1 advantage into the halftime break. In the third period, the Lions scored three out of a possible four points and secured the victory with a 7-2 count in the team routine portion of the match. Vanguard is now 3-0 all time against Davis, with today's victory being the most dominant of all three.

Vanguard 16, St. Mary's 0

After capturing the program's first shutout win the night before, the Blue and Gold doubled down and now has two within a 24 hour period. During the program's first ever match up against SMC, they started the contest by winning three points in the first quarter, and backed it up with another trio of points in the second period. Exiting the intermission, the Pride posted a perfect quarter and took a 10-0 margin into the final quarter. During their final frame of the regular season, Vanguard scored six of a possible nine points.

Ta went on to say, "Comparing this season to last year's, it's a complete turn around. Last year we struggled to even get close to beating another team in our own division, so seeing how we beat several Division I teams this year and playing a pretty even game with them is so surreal. I would have never expected our team to get so far from just being a second year team, so that just goes to show that we are not the team to be underestimated."

A STUNT match has four quarters. The first three periods all feature four routines with the final, fourth quarter containing only three routines. Quarter 1 is partner stunts, Quarter 2 is Pyramids, Quarter 3 is Jumps and Tumbling, and Quarter 4 is the team routine where the previous three quarters are combined. Routines in the first three frames average around 30 seconds each whereas the fourth quarter routines are over 90 seconds each. There are seven levels of routines a team can perform ranging from beginner (1) to advanced (7), with each becoming slightly more challenging.
