COSTA MESA, Calif. – The Vanguard University STUNT Team hosted Day 1 of the Lions Invitational in The Pit, with Concordia University-Irvine and Arizona State University hitting the mat as well. The sixth ranked Lions (6-4) were nearly flawless on the day and are now two-games above .500 for the first time in program history.
Vanguard 21, Arizona State 1
The Lions had the privilege of playing ASU in their first ever stunt game. Vanguard went perfect in the match for the first time in program history over the newly formed team. The Blue and Gold led 4-0 after the first quarter and 8-0 at the intermission. Entering the fourth quarter of team routines, the Pride held a commanding 12-0 victory. The Sun Devils scored the first point in program history during the final routine, much to the delight of the crowd.
Vanguard 16, Arizona State 3
Prior to the third and final game of the day, Head Coach Leslie Allen and the rest of the team honored Jenny Rocha (SR/Yucaipa, CA) in her senior spotlight in front of a full crowd. The festivities also including a reunion of former cheerleaders from the 1970's through the late 1990's including Vanguard Athletics Board Member's Barbi Rouse and Lisa Castle.
Facing off against the Sun Devils for the second time on the day and ASU's third game in a row, the two teams agreed to a shortened game format. The Lions took a 3-0 edge after the first quarter and led 6-0 entering the second half. The third quarter saw the Lions win another 3-0 frame; the final period of the day saw the Blue and Gold have a 7-3 edge in points.
A STUNT match has four quarters. The first three periods all feature four routines with the final, fourth quarter containing only three routines. Quarter 1 is partner stunts, Quarter 2 is Pyramids, Quarter 3 is Jumps and Tumbling, and Quarter 4 is the team routine where the previous three quarters are combined. Routines in the first three frames average around 30 seconds each whereas the fourth quarter routines are over 90 seconds each. There are seven levels of routines a team can perform ranging from beginner (1) to advanced (7), with each becoming slightly more challenging.
