IRVINE, Calif. - Day two of the Shamrock Tournament hosted by Concordia University - Irvine began with the Vanguard Lions (4-4) earning their first program victory over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in a second half come from behind effort. The Pride had lost both matchups against the Mustangs last season. The Lions backed it up with a double overtime victory over Sacramento State, another first in program history. Over the past two season, this marks the first time the Blue and Gold's record has been .500.
Vanguard 15, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 12
The Mustangs, who are the fourth ranked team nationally in the top division of STUNT, won the first quarter of play, ending the beginning three routines with a 4-2 advantage before the two teams each gained a pair of points during the second frame. After the intermission, the Lions found themselves down by a 6-4 count. The tied turned in the third period as the Blue and Gold were awarded four points compared to only one for Cal Poly. Holding a norrow one point lead, the Lions were victorious 7-5 in the team routine portion of the competition.
Vanguard 16, Sacramento State 15 (Double Overtime)
After the first period of play, the Hornets were leading 4-2 and bolstered their lead to 8-2 at the halftime break. Then, the script flipped and Vanguard went 4-0 in the third quarter to get within striking distance entering the fourth period. In the fourth quarter, Vanguard had their highest scoring period in team history with eight points. Regulation ended with a 14-14 tie. During round one of overtime, the teams each were awarded one point before the Pride took home the victory in a second overtime period.
A STUNT match has four quarters. The first three periods all feature four routines with the final fourth quarter containing only three routines. Quarter 1 is partner stunts, Quarter 2 is Pyramids, Quarter 3 is Jumps and Tumbling, and Quarter 4 is team routine where the previous three quarters are combined. Routines in the first three frames average around 30 seconds each whereas the fourth quarter routines are over 90 seconds each. There are seven levels of routines a team can perform ranging from beginner (1) to advanced (7), with step becoming slightly more challenging.
