IRVINE, Calif. - The Lions began competition at the CUI Shamrock Tournament on Friday night, playing Brigham Young University for the first time in program history. Vanguard is a STUNT Division II school like the Cougars are apart of the Division I pool. After four quarters of play, BYU took the match 13-7. 

The Blue and Gold, fresh off two wins at the RCC Tournament, ended the first quarter of play trailing 1-3. During the second period, Vanguard played the Cougars closer but still entered the halftime intermission trailing 6-3. The third quarter did not see much scoring as only three total points were award, two of which went the way of BYU. In the final frame, the Lions scored three tallies but were outscored 5-3 in the partner stunts portion. BYU outscored VU in each quarter.

A STUNT match has four quarters. The first three periods all feature four routines with the final fourth quarter containing only three routines. Quarter 1 is partner stunts, Quarter 2 is Pyramids, Quarter 3 is Jumps and Tumbling, and Quarter 4 is team routine where the previous three quarters are combined. Routines in the first three frames average around 30 seconds each whereas the fourth quarter routines are over 90 seconds each. There are seven levels of routines a team can perform ranging from beginner (1) to advanced (7), with step becoming slightly more challenging.

Next Match: Saturday, March 16th at 10:00 AM against Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and 3:00 PM against Sacramento State University
