STUNT Falls at RCC Big Orange Battle

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Vanguard University (2-7) headed out to San Bernardino County to participate in the Big Orange Battle on the campus of Riverside City College. During their three matches, the Lions took a close loss to RCC before also falling to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and Concordia University-Irvine.

Riverside City 11, Vanguard 10

Vanguard kicked off the early morning in a 2-1 deficit after the first quarter. During the pyramids section, the Tigers added another two points to their score to take a 4-2 edge into the intermission. The Lions rebounded and scored in the second routine of quarter three and trailed 6-4 entering the fourth quarter. After a perfect first team routine, the Pride tied things at 7-7. A 2-1 edge during routine two and a tied 2-2 score in the final segment gave the Tigers a narrow one-point victory.

Concordia 19, Vanguard 9

The middle match of the day saw the Lions square off against the Eagles for the third time this season. The nearly flawless CUI team scored points in all four routines of the first quarter and added on three more points in the second quarter to lead 7-3 at halftime. Another strong period gave the Eagles a 10-4 advantage going into the final period.  During the last frame, the Eagles scored eight of a possible nine points to take the victory by double-digits.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 16, Vanguard 11

During the last match of the trifecta, the Pride posted their highest scoring output of the day. The match was tight through the third quarter as it was knotted 2-2 after the opening two routines and tied 3-3 after the first quarter. Separation began to show in the second quarter when the Mustangs were awarded three of the four points in the frame to hold a 6-4 difference at the intermission. The Lions were edged out 4-2 in the third quarter of jumps and tumbling. The match was decided when the Mustangs were awarded a 3-0 advantage to open the fourth quarter. The final two routines of the game were split down the middle with each team being given five points each.
