IRVINE, Calif. - The Lions (2-6) took to their second weekend series at Concordia University, this time for the Shamrock Tournament. Vanguard took on California Baptist University on Saturday before rounding out competition with Sacramento State and Santa Barbara City College on Sunday. The Blue and Gold fought valiantly but ultimately fell to the Lancers, Hornets, and Vaqueros.

"I am beyond proud of the team's determination and passion for this sport. It inspires me everyday," assistant coach Samantha Schuller said. "We faced a few set backs this weekend, but they embraced the challenges with power and strength."

Cal Baptist 16, Vanguard 12

Vanguard opened the weekend against one of the top cheer and tumbling teams in the nation, winning of multiple national titles over the last few season. The Lancers took a 4-0 edge after the first period of partner stunts. The Blue and Gold scored their lone point of the first half on routine two of the second frame. Trailing 7-1 at the intermission, the Lions and Lancers tied the first routine of the third quarter and the Pride ended the frame outscoring CBU 3-2. Moving into the fourth quarter - team routines - the Lions scored eight out of a possible nine points. On the other side of the mat, the Lancer were awarded seven points to earn the four point victory.

Sac State 12, Vanguard 6

Squaring off for the second time this season, the Hornet picked up right where they left off - clicking on all cylinders. Sac State scored points on each competed routine leading by two at the end of the period. In the next quarter (pyramids) the Hornets and Pride tied the opening frame before the next two rounds were given to SSU. At halftime, the Blue and Gold was behind 5-1. The third quarter was a stalemate as both teams earned two points each bring a 7-3 count into the fourth quarter. During the last quarter of team routines, the Hornets won the first portion 3-2 and the final session 2-1 to capture the six point victory.

Santa Barbara City, 10, Vanguard 9

The Vaqueros struck first in the match and ended the first quarter of play with a 2-1 edge. During the next period, SBCC earned points on all three routines versus only one point awarded to the Blue and Gold. This brought the count to 5-3 favoring Santa Barbara City. Exiting the break, the Lions went 3-3 in the third quarter to tie the match at six points each. During the critical beginning to team competition, the Lions and Vaqueros each scored two points to bring it to a 8-8 tie. In the final routine, the Lions were narrowly edge out by SBCC leaving a one point deficit at the final whistle.

Schuller went on to say, "Thought we didn't take the win on the scoreboard, we had a huge win in our team, learning perseverance and character."
