Costa Mesa, Calif - The Vanguard Lions rebounded to win the final game of the series against No. 4-ranked Cal Baptist by a score of 4-2, after dropping the first half of the doubleheader 7-3, as they limp through a grueling stretch of their season schedule.
In the top part of the twinbill, the Lions were blasted in the second inning for seven runs, an amount the Blue and Gold could not come back from.
After a scoreless first frame, the Lancers used two Lions errors and five hits to jump out to a 7-0 lead, highlighted by RBI singles from Cole Bullard and Ryan Douglass and a two-run double by Kevin Odom.
The Lions reached the scoreboard in the bottom of the second, but only put up a single run, as Jeremiah Mejia singled, stole second base, and later scored on a bunt by Ethan Harper.
The score remained 7-1 until the bottom of the eighth inning when the Pride added two more runs. Tyson Leighton homered to right field, while Jason Dovel singled to center field and eventually scored on an error by the Lancers' first baseman.
The Blue and Gold managed only three runs on the contest, despite having nine hits. The Pride had eight runners left on base, but also had three errors in the game.
Cal Baptist scored seven runs on 12 hits, stranded 10 runners and committed a single error.
The offensive production for the Lions was led by Mejia with three of VU's nine hits and Leighton with his solo home run.
Vanguard starter Mike Leal (3-4) lost the contest for his 1.1 innings in which he was charged with seven runs off six hits. Reliever James McGeary only allowed five hits during 6.2 innings on the mound, striking out three. Joseph Vega III surrendured a single hit in his inning of action.
Eric Wallace (6-) was awarded the win on the contest, pitching a complete game allowing only nine hits, three runs striking out six batters.
Vanguard enacted revenge in nightcap of the double header, jumping out to a lead and never letting go. The Lions reached the scoreboard in the bottom of the first, off a sacrifice fly by Kyle Hardman scoring Sean Wilson. The Blue and Gold picked up a second run in the bottom of the third on Leighton's second homer of the day and team-leading eighth of the season.
Vanguard added another two runs to the lead in the fourth inning as Jason Dovel and Jacob Domingos singled back-to-back to begin the frame. Dovel first scored off a wild pitch and Domingos scored on a squeeze bunt by Mario Romero.
Cal Baptist scored its only two runs of the contest in the top of the fifth inning as Bullard doubled to left field and scored on a left field double by Douglass. Brian Sharp singled to left field scoring Douglass.
The Pride offense was spearheaded by Leighton and Domingos both recording two hits and a run. Vanguard had six hits in game two with three RBI.
Cal Baptist was lead by Bullard and Sharp each going 2-for-3. The Lancers mustered their two runs on seven hits with three errors for the game.
Vanguard starter Robert Purpura (2-4) receives the win, pitching a complete seven-inning game allowing seven hits and two runs while striking out seven batters.
Lancer starting pitcher Devyn Rivera lost his second game of the year (7-2) giving up four runs and five hits in the first four innings. Patrick Smith relieved for the next two innings, giving up a lone hit.
The Lions record now stands at 18-24, including 14-18 in GSAC competition and Cal Baptist now sports an overall win loss total of 36-11, with 23-9 in conference play.
Vanguard next takes the field April 20th at 1:00 p.m. for a double header against La Sierra University, a game that was rescheduled from its original date.
