Round One Goes to Biola

Costa Mesa, Calif. - The bats were in full fury during a makeup baseball game against Biola University, where the Eagles eventually beat the Lions 9-8 as late game mistakes cost Vanguard the victory.

Biola University went on the scoreboard first, putting up a run in the top of the first inning as Boone Farrington scored off an RBI single from Vinnie Fayard.

The Eagles added to their lead scoring three runs in the top of the fourth inning, before the Lions finally scored in the bottom half of the fourth. Kyle Hardman scored on a fielding error by Biola, before Kyle Willett scored on a single by Brandon Pesante.

The Pride rallied to take a 5-4 lead, after scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. This inning was showcased by a two-run home run from Jason Dovel.

Biola responded in the next inning with three runs of their own. Mac Sullivan singled to right center field, scoring Karl Stuck andFarrington then singled to drive home Burket. Sutherland came home on a walk to Fayard.

The Blue and Gold looked to take control of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring three more runs. Sean Wilson and Willet scored on a single from Dovel, and Bryson Rahier singled to center field to plate Dovel.

Trailing 8-7, the Eagles eventually took the lead in the top of the ninth inning, scoring two runs on a pair of Vanguard errors in the inning.

The Biola offense was spearheaded by Fages who had two hits and two runs scored. Fayard also had two hits, two RBI, and one run, while Brian Loard had one hit, one run, and an RBI.

As a team, the Eagles had four strikeouts and one walk, leaving nine runners stranded on base.

The Vanguard bats were highlighted by Dovel who had a game-high four RBI, two hits, and two runs, along with being walked once. Jake Domingos had two hits on the contest, while Pesante added two hits and an RBI for the Blue and Gold.

The Pride had five walks and five strikeouts, while seven runners were left on base during the match.

Eagles starting pitcher Kevin Ryan gave up five runs and six hits in his 4.1 innings on the mound. He walked three batters and struck out three as well. Reliever Jonathan Cade allowed two hits and two runs in his 1.2 innings of action. Kyle Atkins was awarded the win for the game, conceded only two hits and one run in two innings. Cameron McVey gained his fourth save of the season.

The Blue and Gold started Antonio Peraza at pitcher, where he allowed eight hits and seven runs during his 5.1 innings in the game. Reliever James McGeary pitched 0.1 innings, before Mike Leal entered the game for 1.2 innings giving up only a single hit and striking out two batters. Robert Purpura received the loss on the match, allowing two runs in the final 1.2 innings of the contest.

Today's contest was a make up game from last week's four-game set that was rained out. They have now completed the first game of the series, with the other three contests to be played at future dates, still to be determined.

The Blue and Gold will next take the field on March 30th at Point Loma Nazarene University for the beginning of a four-game series. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
